Sea Shepherd: Defending the Whales of Antarctica

Greetings!

It has been an eventful and successful week at Sea Shepherd! With Operation Leviathan in full swing, and after 5 weeks and thousands of miles of searching the Southern Oceans, we found the Japanese whaling fleet. You can read about, see pictures, and watch video of our encounter with them (see article below). We also rescued two whale defenders when their inflatable boat became disabled. {someone above loves you guys }

We're pleased to share with you up-to-date photos from the campaign and video of our encounter with the whaling fleet. I also hope that you will take action and let the Japanese prime minister know that the fleet should be recalled from Antarctica.

Whalers Activities Disrupted by Sea Shepherd

February 9th, 2007 - 0830 Hours (Auckland N.Z. time)


The Sea Shepherd ships Farley Mowat and the Robert Hunter have been engaged in a confrontation with the Japanese whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru since 0530 Hours this morning.

When the Robert Hunter first approached the Nisshin Maru there were three hunter killer vessels with the mother ship. These vessels quickly fled northward. The Nisshin Maru fled east straight towards the Farley Mowat. At two miles from the Farley Mowat, the Nisshin Maru turned and fled back west again.

There was a pod of whales in the area near the whalers. The Sea Shepherd crew is happy to report that these whales fled and are now safe from the Japanese harpoons.

The Sea Shepherd crew has successfully delivered six liters of butyric acid onto the flensing deck of the Nisshin Maru. This "butter acid" is a nontoxic obnoxious smelling substance. The foul smell has cleared the flensing deck and stopped all work of cutting up whales.



Sea Shepherd crew in Zodiacs have nailed plates to the drain outlets (near the waterline) on the Nisshin Maru that spill the blood of the whales from the flensing deck into the sea. This is backing up the blood onto the flensing decks. The plates are secured by Hilt nail guns that drive steel nails through solid steel.


Sea Shepherd has relayed the coordinates to the Greenpeace vessel Esperanza. Despite Greenpeace's refusal to cooperate with the Sea Shepherd ships, the whales need every anti-whaling ship in the area. Greenpeace refuses to give Sea Shepherd their position so it is unknown how long it will take them to reach the area where the whaling fleet is operating.

Sea Shepherd was able to outmaneuver the Japanese satellite tracking system by taking the ships south of the Balleny Islands through heavy ice. Thirty years of ice navigation opposing the Canadian seal slaughter has proven quite helpful. The Japanese satellite surveillance program cannot track a ship's wake through the ice. "We came in the back door out of the freezer so to speak," said Captain Paul Watson.

The following message was delivered to the Japanese whaling fleet this morning:

Nisshin Maru, this is Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd vessel Farley Mowat. Please be advised that you are killing whales in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary. You are targeting endangered species of whales in violation of international conservation law. You are killing whales in violation of the IWC global moratorium on commercial whaling. Please cease and desist your illegal whaling operations and leave the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary. We are acting in accordance with the principles of the United Nations World Charter for Nature. The Charter authorizes non-governmental organizations and individuals to uphold international conservation law.

The Sea Shepherd ships have been searching for the Japanese fleet for five weeks and have covered thousands of square miles of ocean.

The crew of both Sea Shepherd ships are relieved that the Japanese whaling fleet has been found and is now under pursuit and engaged in confrontation with the Robert Hunter and the Farley Mowat. They can now do what they do best – save whales!

Sea Shepherd's Whale Saving Crew are Rescued


Safe Return for Pair in Disabled Zodiac

Two missing crewmembers from the Farley Mowat were found and safely rescued eight hours after being lost at sea following a confrontation with the illegal Japanese whaling fleet.

The Zodiac inflatable carrying 2nd Officer Karl Neilsen, 29, of Australia, and Engineer John Gravois, 24, of the United States, fell back from the other Sea Shepherd ships after its fiberglass hull cracked and filled with water. The damage was caused when the inflatable struck the steel hull of the whaling vessel Nisshin Maru in heavy seas. The two were quickly lost as heavy fog, snow, and sleet conditions suddenly moved into the area.

This December, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will embark on its fourth expedition to the remote southern waters off the coast of Antarctica, with the launch of its latest Antarctic whale defense campaign: Operation Migaloo. Sea Shepherd has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to the humpback whale featured on its logo and will not stand by while the Japanese whalers target nearly 1000 whales for certain death, including 50 endangered humpback whales and 10 endangered fin whales in the Southern Oceans.

The campaign is named in honor of Migaloo, an endangered albino humpback who has become a national icon in Australia. This year, the sights of the ruthless Japanese harpooners are set square on the endangered humpbacks, meaning that Migaloo and all of his family are under imminent threat of death at the hands of Japanese pirate whalers.

Founder and President of Sea Shepherd, Captain Paul Watson, will soon embark with an international crew on the ship, the Robert Hunter, to enforce international conservation law and prevent the illegal slaughter of endangered species by an outlaw whaling fleet. As the relentless Japanese whalers seek to hunt down and kill Migaloo and his family, Sea Shepherd will be hunting the whalers with the firm objective of intervention against their illegal activities.

"I did not establish the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as a protest organization," said Captain Watson. "I have not gone to sea over all these years to simply bear witness to the atrocities that whalers continue to inflict upon the most gentle and intelligent beings in the seas. We are sea cops-operating legally under the guidelines of the United Nation's World Charter for Nature, which allow for the enforcement of international conservation law by non-governmental organizations in international jurisdictions."

For more than three decades, Sea Shepherd has been at the forefront of the whale wars, defending the gentle giants wherever and whenever they can. Sea Shepherd has tackled overwhelming odds with insufficient resources, won many victories, and saved the lives of thousands of whales. In 2005-2006, Sea Shepherd harried the Japanese fleet enough to ensure they went home 83 whales short of their self-appointed quota. In 2006-2007, the Japanese whalers fell over 500 whales short of their illegal quota. Sea Shepherd will return this year with a ship to match the speed of the Japanese fleet, new equipment for intervention, and an international crew of dedicated volunteers willing to spend their holidays at the bottom of the earth on a historic voyage to save whales.

Sea Shepherd is on a quest to protect the greatest treasure of the seas-the great whales. Success! The Humpbacks are Saved... For Now

Temporary Victory For Migaloo

Japan has now officially announced that they will not kill humpback whales this season. Migaloo and the other humpbacks are safe, at least until December 2008.




In a deal brokered by the United States, Japan has agreed to remove the humpbacks from the death list for this season. There have been no reports from the Japanese fleet on how many humpbacks if any have been killed so far this season.

Japan still intends to continue to kill 50 endangered Fin whales and 935 piked (minke) whales. Japan put the humpbacks on the list at the 2007 International Whaling Commission meeting primarily as a bargaining chip to broker for support of their commercial whaling activities on other species. That tactic failed and Japan set forth to punish the pro-whale nations of the IWC by announcing the quota for endangered humpbacks.

Unfortunately this is only a temporary respite for Migaloo and his species. Japan is determined to continue to escalate their kill quotas and to expand to other species. The Japanese are planning the construction of a much larger whale processing vessel to replace the aging Nisshin Maru.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society hopes that Australia will closely monitor Japanese whaling operations to ensure that no humpbacks will be killed. The Japanese whaling fleet has a long history of under reporting catches to the IWC.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be returning to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to intervene against Japanese whaling operation directed at endangered fin whales and piked whales.

The Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin will be stopping briefly in Melbourne to pick up essential engine parts and to refuel before returning to the Antarctic coast. The Steve Irwin has just spent two weeks patrolling the Eastern side of the Japanese hunting area. Japan has always started their whaling on the Eastern end but this year to throw off opposition they traveled via the Lombok Straits and down the Western side of Australia to begin their killing at the extreme Western side of the zone. The Steve Irwin should be in this area by the first week of January 2008.

The decison to call off the humpback whale kill for this season is the result of intense international public opposition to the targeting of humpback whales. Operation Migaloo has been a success, at least for this season. Now we have to concentrate on defending the 985 whales including the fifty endangered fin whales that Japan is training their harpoon sights on right now.

The Crocodile Hunter is now hunting pirate whalers and with a bone in her teeth, the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin is presently cleaving the swells in a race to return to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary where the blood of the whales is flowing freely amidst the heart -breaking screams of whales dying in horrific agony at the hands of black hearted cetacean serial killers.

It has been a frustrating week but thanks to an incredible effort on the part of a few crew and shore supporters, the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin now has engine efficiency restored to 100% and we are ready to resume the search for the elusive Japanese whaling fleet.

It was a difficult decision to return in mid December after reaching the coast of Antarctica . We could have proceeded on our one engine which still allows us over 14 knots but I decided we needed speed superiority over the Japanese ships and that could only be done with both main engines working together.

And so we headed back arriving on the morning of Christmas Eve and dropped anchor at Williamstown near Melbourne .

Chris Aultman had done a wonderful job of procuring the parts needed to address the repairs. The port engine had dropped a fuel valve into the piston and within seconds that valve was slammed by the piston against the cylinder liner and the head causing extensive internal damage requiring the replacement with a new piston, new head, and new cylinder liner. The parts ordered from Scotland at a cost of 30,000 British pounds were waiting for us when we arrived back in Australia .

Chief Engineer Charles Hutchings made the repairs within a day only to discover that the shattered valve had sent pieces of steel into one of our four turbo chargers completely destroying that complex and expensive piece of machinery.

Chris Aultman contacted the local ABB Ltd. agent John Thomson who was actually on a beach enjoying his holidays. He agreed to come the next morning to dismantle the turbocharger and ABB had a new replacement assembled in Zurich , Switzerland and on a plane within three hours. Mr. Thompson arrived on the morning of the 1st of January and installed the unit and waived his fee. We don't know what the actual cost of the unit is because ABB will bill us later but we suspect it will be fairly expensive but we had no choice as it is essential. We were grateful for their exceptionally efficient service and especially between Christmas and New Years.

The consequences of returning to port in the middle of a campaign with a volunteer crew are that we were bound to lose a few.

First we lost Fern Holland and Rob Langstaff due to chronic seasickness. Mihirangi, Brad Axiak, and Simon King had to leave because the delay cut into the time in February when they had events or appointments scheduled. Mihirangi as a popular musician has a tour beginning in early February, Simon has scheduled knee surgery and Brad has a wedding. All three of whom were honourably discharged.

And then we lost the usual few, whose experience of a campaign did not live up to their romantic expectations of what a Sea Shepherd campaign is about. Saving whales means operating a ship and working within the hierarchy of the ship's command structure. This is an alien concept to many people unfamiliar with going to sea. Thus six volunteers deserted due to the disillusionment factor. And this is a good thing. We cannot expect people to risk their lives when they can't endure or tolerate inconvenience, practical orders, necessary discipline and the reality of a ship's day to day operations.

What this means is that we are now under way with a few less crew but a far more committed crew. I suppose we can look at the first run down to the Antarctic coast as a shake-down crew to see who is fully committed because that commitment will be needed if we are to make a difference when we find the Japanese whalers.

As First Officer Peter Brown said in response to crew departures, “I think a few people are realizing that this isn't summer camp.”

The truth is that this mission is of absolute commitment and dedication. This is not rhetoric when we say we are willing to risk our lives to protect the whales. We have done so many times and we will continue to do so. We are not afraid of losing our ship and we are not afraid of dying and I will tell you why.

We sail as shepherds in defense of some of the most incredibly awesome living beings on this planet - we sail to save lives and to oppose horrendous cruelty and we sail against a violent ruthless opposition - whalers from Japan, all members of a Yakuza controlled union, all crewmembers on one of the largest floating aquatic death platforms ever constructed. The Nisshin Maru is the Cetacean Death Star and the most evil ship sailing the high seas today. It must be destroyed if the whales are to live.

There are a thousand sentient, intelligent, socially complex, awesome citizens of this planet whose lives will be ruthlessly snuffed out by these vicious Japanese harpoons. In fact these whales are dying now, spilling their hot steaming blood into the frigid black waters of the Southern Oceans, slaughtered in an area designated as a Whale Sanctuary and killed for no other reason than to assuage Japanese national pride.

These are self aware beings who have caused humankind no wrong or distress. Instead they have given us their beauty and filled our hearts with wonderment and admiration. And there is much that they could teach us if we would only set aside our conceit and accept that these are beings of exceptional intelligence and perceptions. They are equal to us and deserve our respect and they deserve the right to live unmolested from the horror of human violence.

Most people are moved by whales especially those who have seen them. For many people, seeing a whale is a life changing experience.

Throughout my life I have been privileged to have swum with and communicated with a great many whales. I have clung to an Orca's dorsal as it dove into the cold clear waters of the Straits of Bella Bella, I have swum alongside the Humpbacks off Maui and been alongside the Grey whales in Magdalena Bay . I had my life saved by a dying Sperm whale off the coast of Northern California and surfed with dolphins off Malibu . They are my family, my friends, and living treasures to the Oceans, in fact they are the very soul and mind of the seas and as a lifelong sailor, surfer and diver, I have a duty to do all within my power to protect them from the savageness of the darker side of humanity.

And so we sail forth with total resolve to intervene against an injustice and a murderous crime against innocence and sentience. We sail forth not to bear witness to an atrocity, nor to document the massacre of the whales - but to stop the killing. We sail forth not to commit violence but to prevent violence.

And perhaps this will only come about through the sacrifice of our lives and freedoms. That is why we risk our lives in an effort to stop this insanity. We must do as Walt Whitman wrote in his poem - risk our ship, ourselves and all!

I am often asked if I am prepared to die for a whale. It is a difficult question to answer. When I was in my twenties I had no hesitation and I blocked the harpoons without a thought nor care. The young do not think of dying when it matters most, only later does reflection allow for the hesitation of caution. But over the years I have faltered occasionally and found myself being cautious and wary, the two things that in fact can kill you.

It is a condition that I refer to as falling from grace with the sea. And it is a dangerous condition and one that I sometimes forget about.

When one is at grace with the sea, then the sea is friend, protector, and guide. We become in spirit, the sons and daughters of Poseidon. We need not fear the sea nor those enemies that ride upon or within her. We need not fear any citizen of the sea and we need not fear for failure. We flow with the sea and we let the sea guide us and we allow the sea to bring us to our objective. In return the sea demands nothing less than our courage, our resolve and our absolute respect. Let any of these three demands fall by the wayside and the consequences are always disastrous.

This might sound a little silly to most people but there are a great many sailors and even more surfers and a large number of divers who know exactly what I'm talking about.

And how much more noble and worthwhile is it to fight and to risk one life for the preservation of a species, the prevention of extinction of creatures that have existed upon this planet for tens of millions of years before we came along and began to kill them off. Certainly that is a worthy as going to war over real estate, religions and resources, the three things that most human conflicts are caused by and have been the cause of hundreds of millions of human deaths over the centuries. Society bestows medals on people who fight in such conflicts yet questions the sanity of those who fight selflessly for the preservation of life.

As the lyrics of the song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers put it, “I could die for you.” For that is the ultimate commitment of love - the willingness to die in defense of another or for others - the greatest expression of selflessness and courage that any person can demonstrate.

I love this Earth and I love her oceans especially so. Since the day I sat as a boy on a pier on Passamaquoddy Bay to this day as I command this ship in the Roaring Forties of the Southern Oceans en route to do battle with pirate whalers, I have served the sea with all of my strength and endurance. And the sea has been good to me and as a result I have never lost a crewmember to accidental death or injury, and I have never been the cause of a death or an injury to those we intervene against. But there is a cost for the sea is a harsh mistress but it is a cost that I decided many years ago was acceptable for the rewards have been worth the ordeals and the treasure I have sought is the living heart of the sea itself and keeping that heart beating is the greatest contribution that I can imagine bequeathing to the future… and yes I could die for that.

V Day for Seals in Europe

The European Union has delivered a strong message of mercy to the world’s persecuted seal population. The European Commission adopted a proposal today to ban all products from seals killed inhumanely from import into European Union member nations.

“After more than four decades of fighting this brutal, savage and extremely cruel slaughter of seals on Canada’s Eastern coast, an incredible victory has been achieved with the proposed banning of seal pelts into European markets,” said Captain Paul Watson. “This will mean that seal products cannot be transshipped to Asia through European ports and since Europeans define global fashions, what is not in fashion in Paris and Rome will no longer be in fashion in China or Japan.”

EU Environmental Commissioner Stavros Dimas told reporters, “Seal products coming from countries which practice cruel hunting methods must not be allowed to enter the EU. The EU is committed to upholding high standards of animal welfare."

The EU proposal says the trade in seal products would be allowed from countries that can offer guarantees their hunting techniques are "consistent with high animal-welfare standards" and the animals are killed swiftly without undue suffering.

Special exemptions will also be allowed for Canada's Arctic Inuit community.

The ban recommends a certificate and labels be provided by countries exporting seal products making clear seal products they trade meet strict EU conditions.

Canada may insist that the Canadian slaughter of seals is “humane” but the evidence demonstrates that it is in fact exceptionally cruel. The only way that a seal pelt can be sold in Europe now is if the killing of each seal in documented on video tape and the pelt is marked to match it with the video. If Canadian sealers are forced to actually attempt to humanely kill seals they will have a very slow time of it because it takes time and perfect conditions to slaughter an animal in hostile weather conditions on moving ice.

The European Union was forced to word the ban the way they did to avoid trade retaliations from Canada. Canada could have imposed trade restrictions for an outright ban but it will be difficult to contradict the wording of the proposal that specifically prohibits products obtained inhumanely.

“What is Canada going to do?” asked Captain Watson. “Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn can’t very well say we oppose banning seal products derived from cruelty. Nor can he say we have the right to put inhumane products on the world market. He can continue to insist that the seal slaughter is well regulated and humane but now he has to prove it and quite frankly there is no way that the slaughter of seal pups can be demonstrated to be humane.”

If the seal slaughter continues now it will be as a glorified welfare project to maintain barbaric traditions in the face of a civilized society.

“As long as sealers continue to go to the ice to kill seals for any reason whatsoever they will be monitored and they will be harassed,” said Captain Watson. “Cruelty and diminishment of marine species must not be tolerated for any reason, economic or cultural. This proposal is the death nail for one of the most despicable and obscene wildlife massacres on the planet. If Canada will not voluntarily join the 21st Century we will continue to kick the government’s savage butt until they do.”

Captain Paul Watson is a Canadian raised in an East Coast Canadian fishing village and he has opposed the slaughter of the seals since he was a boy of 10.

“After 48 years of enduring the humiliating shame of being a Canadian and association with this annual horror show, I welcome this European measure with great joy,” he said.

Canadian seal pelt prices have fallen dramatically since the European Union first began to take measures to ban seal products. The proposed ban will also impact imports of seal products from Southern Africa and Russia.

In April the Dutch registered Sea Shepherd ship Farley Mowat was boarded at gunpoint in international waters in an attempt to prevent documentation of cruelty on the ice. Videos and photos of the seal slaughter were seized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Captain Alex Cornelissen of the Netherlands and Swedish First Officer Peter Hammarstedt were arrested and charged with approaching too close to a seal slaughter. They will be tried for this “crime” in April 2009. Meanwhile the Farley Mowat is being held by Canadian authorities until the case is resolved.

“If the seal hunt is humane as the government insists it is, then why the extreme measures to confiscate evidence that it is not, and why is it illegal in Canada to document the killing of a seal without supervision of the government?” asked Captain Cornelissen.

“We took pictures of seals being cruelly slaughtered,” said Peter Hammarstedt. “Yet the government is treating us like we are armed terrorists. Perhaps they have finally realized that the camera is a more potent weapon than a gun and that the truth is more threatening than their lies. We will fight them on the ice. We will fight them in the courts. We will fight them in marketplace but we will never surrender to savage cruelty and the destruction of a marine wildlife species.”

Sea Shepherd Issues Arrest Order for the Japanese Whaling Fleet

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has drawn up an arrest warrant for the Japanese whaling fleet.

“We intend to intervene against the continued illegal whaling activities of the Japanese fleet in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary,” said Captain Paul Watson. “We intend to stop the killing of endangered species of whales in the Sanctuary, whales that are being killed in violation of the global moratorium on whaling. We intend to enforce the orders of the Australian Federal Court that has banned Japanese whalers from killing whales in the waters of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Our objective is to arrest the Nisshin Maru and its fleet of hunter killer boats.”

In four months time, the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin will depart from Australia for Sea Shepherd’s fifth major mission to confront the illegal activities of the Japanese whaling fleet.

Every year Sea Shepherd has gone South we have been increasingly more effective. In 2005/2006 the whalers were 84 whales short of their quota because of our interventions. In 2006/2007 they only took half their quota and in 2007/2008 they took zero Humpbacks, zero Fin whales and only half their Piked whale quota. They have lost tens of millions of dollars and the so called Institute for Cetacean Research is over fifty million dollars in debts on loans from the Japanese government.

The Japanese whaling industry is becoming increasingly more frustrated because of the annual interference with their operations and the rising debt they are incurring. We suspect that they will be more violently defensive of their illegal activities this next season than they were last season. There is talk of sending a Japanese warship to the Southern Ocean and if that happens it will be a violation of the Antarctic Treaty. There is talk about physically assaulting the Steve Irwin and capturing the crew and taking them back to Japan as prisoners. If that happens it will certainly be an international incident involving numerous nations because the crew of Sea Shepherd ships are usually citizens of a dozen different countries.

No amount of intimidation will deter Sea Shepherd from returning to the Southern Ocean this year. Every single crewmember onboard the ship understands the risks. Far better to risk one’s life for the protection of the whales and the oceans than to die for some oil well somewhere, or over some asinine conflict over real estate.

This year’s campaign is called Operation Musashi in honour of legendary Samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi who wrote of the two-fold way of pen and sword signifying that confrontation must be partnered with education to achieve a permanent victory. The name was also chosen to reflect that Sea Shepherd is not opposed to Japanese culture. In fact Sea Shepherd operates very much in accordance with Japanese cultural values. The word “samurai” means to serve and in this respect, Sea Shepherd crew are the Samurai of the Seas.

Japanese whale killers have left for the Whale Sanctuary
And so it begins.
The Yakusa owned and controlled Japanese whaling fleet has left Japan in a very low key manner, without the traditional celebratory send-off, with fewer crewmembers and with less support than years before. They are also departing on the threshold of a major recession in the Japanese economy.

And as President Bill Clinton once said, "It's the economy stupid."

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin is scheduled to depart at the end of November which should put both the whaling fleet and the Sea Shepherd crew on a course that will bring them together somewhere in the remote and hostile waters off the Antarctic coast in mid-December.

"We have them on the ropes economically," said Captain Paul Watson. "We intend to make this yet another year of profit loss for the whalers. It is the one language they understand and it is the only thing that is going to shut down whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary."

Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett has announced that Australia will invest millions into whale research to prove that non-lethal methods are sufficient and that Japan does not need to employ lethal research to secure their research objectives.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society certainly supports any non-lethal research that will further our understanding of the great whales but does not think that Australia's initiative will convince Japan to cease their slaughter.

"Japan is not interested in research," said Captain Watson. "We all know that this whale hunt has absolutely nothing to do with research. It's about killing whales for meat to send to market in Japan. It's a sham, a façade, in short it is a whale of a lie. They will never participate in non-lethal research for the simple reason there is no profit in it."

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society also does not believe that whaling will be ended by efforts to convince Japanese citizens to pressure their government to end whaling. Such a campaign could take decades and the whales need to stop dying now.

"The argument that we should not interfere, that we should not take direct action and instead lobby for change in Japan is absurd," explained Captain Watson. "Would this approach have worked against the Nazis? Would the German people have made the decision to not kill Jews and other people they did not like on their own? Would we have counseled the allies to not interfere? I don't think so. Did the appeasement by Jewish leaders in the Warsaw ghetto work? No, the people died. And the whales will continue to die as we wait for some miracle within Japan that may or may not eventually arrive."

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society believes that only direct intervention will work in a world where governments refuse to take action and refuse to uphold international conservation law.

The simple solution is for governments to demand that illegal whaling be ended and if not they should invoke economic sanctions. U.S. law already has provisions to implement sanctions but these sanctions are being withheld for political and trade reasons. It is because governments are not upholding their responsibility that Sea Shepherd is being forced to intervene.

In December, Sea Shepherd will once again engage the Japanese fleet and once again, the lives of whales will be saved and the whaling fleet will lose a great deal of money.

"We intend to give a Christmas gift to the whales this year," said Captain Paul Watson. "We intend to give as many of them as possible - the gift of life."

Whale Wars a Hit with 3.6 Million Viewers

It looks like Animal Planet's TV show Whale Wars, which follows Sea Shepherd's Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign: Operation Migaloo, has captured the attention of the public.

"This is great news for the whales, for Sea Shepherd, and marine conservation," said Captain Paul Watson. "More and more people are becoming aware of the illegal atrocities that the Japanese whalers are doing in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary and they are witnessing first hand the passion of men and women from around the world who are defending the whales."

Members of a hardline conservation group visiting the UAE have hit out at the capture of a whale shark and also criticised the decision to integrate different species of shark together in Dubai Mall's aquarium.
The Sea Shepherd activists are outraged that a whale shark is still in captivity at Atlantis and believe a release date should be announced immediately - to stop the creature from suffering further psychological damage.
They are also concerned that four different species of shark have been homed together at Dubai Mall's new aquarium, and say the animals could attack each other.
Steve Roest, UK director for Sea Shepherd, told 7DAYS: "The psychological stress on the whale shark is enormous. "We are pushing for a release date and that needs to be soon.
"Whale sharks travel for thousands of miles and are guided by ocean currents so to be kept in a tank must be stressful in a way we cannot comprehend.. .

A very happy holidays to all of our friends and supporters from me and my crew from onboard the Steve Irwin off the coast of Antarctica.
We intend to give the whales and all of our supporters a very special gift this holiday season.

As I write this we are pursuing the Japanese whaling fleet through the ice. Thanks to you, we are now in a position to fully obstruct their cruel slaughter.

We have no idea how they will react. We cost them $70 million dollars last year and that kind of money is something these whale killers take very seriously - seriously enough to kill to defend their losing profits.

This will be the fifth holiday season that I have spent with my crew down in these remote and distant waters, and I would not wish to be in any other place.

Last year we prevented the Japanese whalers from killing nearly 500 whales. And we prevented them from killing 500 whales the year before. We intend to do even better this year by hitting them earlier and harder.

Over one thousand whales are swimming freely in these South Polar seas because you have supported us and enabled us to be here to protect them.

I cannot even begin to express to you just how much I appreciate your support. It's not very lonely down here at the bottom of the world when I know that there are people like you cheering us on and contributing to our success in protecting our oceans and saving the lives of whales.

And the truth is that although my crew and I are down here, you are down here also with us in spirit because without you we could not and would not be here and the whales would have neither protection nor defense.

We will be down here as the New Year opens and we will stay here for as long as our fuel holds out and if we can return after refueling, we will. We will never surrender the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary without a fight.

I have an excellent crew this year, all of whom understand the risks involved and all of them willing to risk their lives and freedom to defend these gentle and intelligent leviathans in this most beautiful of Oceanic habitats.

Thank you for being down here with us in spirit. In return, we will act in your name to uphold international conservation law in accordance with the United Nations World Charter for Nature. We are not down here to protest whaling, to hang banners, or to witness and film the dying agony of the whales.

We are down here to stop the killing and we will do just that.

After shutting down the Japanese whaling operations in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary for over a month this season, our ship the Steve Irwin is now headed back to port in Australia. Operation Musashi has been a very successful campaign for the whales this year. We found and engaged the whalers earlier than ever, kept them on the run for weeks, and actively intervened against their illegal activities. The campaign received wide international media attention and recorded hours of video footage which will be seen by millions of people in the next season of Whale Wars on Animal Planet. We intend to return next year and will never stop intervening against their illegal whaling operations. Your valued contributions insure our continued action to defend whales and all ocean wildlife.


Sea Shepherd Returns from the Whale Wars

The Steve Irwin and her crew have withdrawn from the Japanese whaling fleet to begin preparations to return with a faster and longer range ship.

"I have always said that we would do everything we can short of hurting people to end illegal whaling in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary," said Captain Paul Watson. "We have done everything we could with the resources available to us this year. We have shut down their illegal operations for over a month in total. We have cost them money and we have saved the lives of a good many whales. And although we are willing to take the risks required, even to our own lives, I am not prepared to do to the Japanese whalers what they do to the whales..."
