According to a Sufi saying, "The moon is a dervish before the sun, and yet among the stars of the night it stands as the greatest light." Submission to that sun confers a great power, beacause it frees one from the slavery to many other things.
Once we begin to see the infinite power of Love as the greatest cause in the universe, little by little we begin to serve it. Eventually my friends, we begin to see that even a bitter drink is sweet when it is from the Beloved!
Knowing that Love is the master of the universe helps us to accept and learn from every experience. Knowing that there is an eternal dimension residing here in intimate association with material existence will begin to free us from fears. When we are less governed by negative thoughts about God's creation, we will be freed from many fears.
"Someone who worries only about You
is saved from many fears.
The heart that falls into Your love burns and burns.
The one who gives himself to You
gives up everything else.
Worldliness looks like a poison.
Someone who lives with a vision of the End passes up poisons."
[Yunus Emre, The Drop That Became the Sea]
Whatever we do for the love of God benifits our souls and our lives in a way that ego-motivated actions never can. Whatever we do for the love of God is done with sincerity because it is not motivated by self-interest. We leave our concern for gain and loss, success and failure, in the hands of God. We stop considering ourselves the sole cause of our actions and their results. Consequently, we become the instuments of a deep wisdom and love.
If we attempt to go this way alone, we will only find our own egos.
We do not melt in God without love. We do not survive in God without the poverty and humility of submission.
Humiltiy is our awareness of our dependence on a vast Intelligence.

There is no higher purpose other than the recognition of our own relative nonexistence in relation to the Whole. At this level the Oneness becomes our only wish. We learn to approach a state of positive, functional nonexistence. What would this state of positive nonexistence look like? The state of positive, functional nonexistence is the state of living from the essential Self, manifesting through an individual personality but not dominated by the role it plays, by its personal likes and dislikes, by the conditioning and customs of its culture. In contrast, the false self lives in fear and lies, hating to have these exposed, desperately defending its artificial self-image.
The essential Self is fundamentally invulnerable and at ease, because it is anchored in Being. This anchoring at the core of oneself allows the personality to be much more vulnerable, open, honest. If the essential Self adopts a provisional or social identity-which may be neccessary for certain reasons-it does not take it too seriously, does not become completely identified with it. The essential Self does not become inflated with its identity; it lives in the humility of presence and can keep a sense of humor about itself.
Once Rabi`a, a tenth-century Sufi saint, had nothing to eat in her house, and she was standing at her door with an empty pot. For a moment she wished she had an onion. Just then a bird flew over and dropped an onion from its mouth into Rabi`a's pot. Rabi`a looked at the onion and looked again at the sky, smiled, and said, "But don't expect me to believe the Almighty is a mere onion vendor." The humility of presence opens us to our own essential Self and its essence qualities.
Humility is our connection with our own fundamental Being, which has certain qualities:
Acceptance of what is, rather than complaints of "poor me" or "Why me?"
Openess, rather than preoccupation with "me."
Gratefulness, rather than resentment for what has happened to "me."
Generosity, rather than posessiveness.
Modesty, rather than the self-importance of "me."
Forgiveness, rather than blame of others or ourselves.
Trust, rather than insecurity and doubt.
One way this process of transformation can be described is in terms of the changes of state from solid to liquid to gas. The compulsive-obsessive self is like ice- hard, seperate, and alone. The balanced self is more like water, fluid, able to merge with others and flow, able to dissolve and even purify the negative life. The higher stages are more like the molecular state of a fragrance- very subtle, penetrating, not nearly as limited in space or time. We can visualize the self as something that can become even more subtle, refined, spacious, penetrating. The more we spiritualize our animal qualities and bring them into service, the more we tame "the beast" with love, the more we attain wholeness, and the more that natural self can be the instrument of real value, which are transpersonal or spiritual in nature.
The knowing heart.
