Is there anything extra you can do to help along with getting a nice tan?

I have the same problem. I'm a white, and all the will do is burn my

Eating A LOT of carrots will give you a little color. Plus using a bronzing cream. I'll look thru my organic magazine and find the ones that will bronze and not turn you orange.

That's what I had to use when I modeled bathing suits a LONG time ago.

In order to get a tan, one must have the skin pigment called melanin. Some blondes and redhead people have the skin pigment melanin in spots called freckles. Some have many freckles that run together, but the color is usually uneven.

People with skin type I, rarely tan. The body does not produce melanin or protective agents that help to prevent the destruction of your DNA in your body.

Regards Tanning Pills:
The tanning pills will not help your body to tan if you have any sort of skin type, but people with skin type I are most vulnerable, as the skin is already super sensitive. This may be dangerous as a person with such a skin type may be more vulnerable to sunburns.

If one doesn't have the skin pigment, then they can't tan, Simple as.

That is supposed to be taught in schools under Anatomy and Physiology. What are they teaching people now?

Those are the most susceptible to skin cancers and need a sunscreen to go out in the

No pigment. No tan. Sorry. Sad

Best Sunless Tanning
The best sunless tanning results depend what an individual deems a great tan. The best sunless tanning that lasts only a couple of days is spray tanning. This results in an even glowing tan on the body without the risk of UV rays on sensitive skin or streaks and orange spots on the skin due to sunless tanning lotion.

It is said that the best sunless tanning that lasts the longest amount of time and doesn’t wash off is often the regular use of the tanning bed.

Quote:
With regular and proper use, a tanning bed can be a safe effective way to get enough sunlight. You would also get some vitamin D in a natural way that is recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

NOTE: The tanning bed still won't work, because the skin pigment melanin is still needed. Also, it puts you at a higher risk for cancer. It cooks you inside out. It will also age you faster. One of my sisters used it a lot, and she looks 15 years older than I. She's one year younger. One lady cooked her reproductive organs, and got ovarian cancer.

Got Cancer? Get a tanning bed!
NOT WORTH IT!!

Spray Tanning
Spray tanning is often called airbrush tanning. This is a safe, natural way to tan the skin without the use of sunless tanning lotions or using a tanning bed. The spray tanning works by using a special formula that acts like makeup on the skin. The spray tanning formula may last a couple of days. The results are usually very nice and it is safe for people of any skin type. It does not produce a ‘true’ tan but spray tanning is so far proven safe. The tan will be gone with a couple of days of showering, depending on the formula used. This type of tanning is most often used for a 'quick fix' when you want to look your best for a party or for a special event.

For these to be even, you must use a loofah to exfoiliate your skin. You can exfoiliate your face with microdermabrasion.

A good home unit is from: http://www.youthfulessence.com

Karolina, the Spray Tanning would be your best best since you are fair skinned and if you have no melanin skin pigment. That way, you will not damage your beautiful skin and you will not age as fast.

How Tanning Works

So, now that we know all about the skin we can start to actually understand tans and sunburns. When you get a tan, what is actually happening is that the melanocytes are producing melanin pigment in reaction to ultraviolet light in sunlight. Ultraviolet light stimulates melanin production. The pigment has the effect of absorbing the UV radiation in sunlight, so it protects the cells from UV damage. Melanin production takes a fair amount of time - that is why most people cannot get a tan in one day. You have to expose yourself to UV for a short period of time to activate the melanocytes. They produce melanin over the course of hours. By repeating this process over 5 to 7 days pigment builds up in your cells to a level that is protective.

The previous paragraph applies to Caucasians. In a variety of other races melanin production is continuous, so the skin is always pigmented to some degree. In these races the incidence of skin cancer is much lower because cells are constantly protected from UV radiation by melanin.

Melanocytes actually produce two different pigments: eumelanin (brown) and phaeomelanin (yellow and red). Red heads happen to produce more phaeomelanin and less eumelanin, which is why they don't tan very well. In albinos, the chemical pathway that produces melanin cannot proceed because an enzyme called Tyrosinase is missing. Therefore albinos have no melanin in their skin, hair or irises.

Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) is produced by the pituitary gland. MSH flows through the bloodstream and reaches the melanocytes, encouraging them to produce more melanin (for example, a person injected with a large dose of MSH will get darker). The pituitary gland is actually quite interesting - it is tied into the optic nerve, which means that it can sense light. If you have ever raised chickens for eggs, you know that in the winter egg production falls way off. You solve this problem by providing light in the chicken coop. The extra light stimulates the pituitary gland in chickens, which causes the gland to produce a hormone essential to egg laying. In humans, light affects the pituitary gland as well and one result is the production of MSH. A funny side-effect of all of this is that wearing sunglasses may make you more susceptible to sunburn!

How Sunlight Works

Sunlight arrives on earth in three forms: infrared (heat), visible light and ultraviolet. Ultraviolet light is classified into three categories:

  • UVA (315 to 400 nm), also known as black light, which causes tanning
  • UVB (280 to 315 nm), which causes damage in the form of sunburn
  • UVC (100 to 280 nm), which is filtered out by the atmosphere and never reaches us.
99% of the sun's UV radiation at sea level is UVA. It is the UVB that causes most of the problems related to sun exposure: things like aging, wrinkles, cancer and so on, although research is increasingly implicating UVA as well.

One of the interesting things about UV radiation is that it is reflected by different surfaces. These reflections can amplify the effects of UV exposure. For example, snow reflects 90% of UV light. That is why you can get snow blindness and severe sunburns from skiing on a sunny day. Sand can reflect up to 20% of UVB that hits it, meaning that you can get extra UV exposure at the beach.

On the other hand, certain things absorb almost all UV radiation partially or completely. Glass is one of these substances - many glasses are very good absorbers of UV (which is why you may have heard that you cannot get sunburn in a greenhouse - just make sure it is glass and not plastic covering the greenhouse!). Most sunscreens use chemicals that have the same UV-absorbing properties.

I've never heard of this being done before. I'm going to look into that more.
I'm not really into injecting anything with a needle. Got microchips? Get injected.

Okay, I got curious and did some searching on MSH. Smile

Drugs that affect melanogenesis [in brief]
Understanding the drugs that can effect melanogenesis is instructive in understanding the limitations of nutritional supplements.

Melanotan
Melanotan is a synthetic hormone that mimics the action of MSH, or melanocyte stimulating hormone. According to the scientists who have tested and developed it, it has no effect on people with albinism or vitiligo. It only works for people without pigmentation problems.

Not yet approved for use by the FDA, Melanotan may be an effective preventative treatment for people at risk for skin cancer. So far, it is effective only when administered by injection, not orally.

However, many questions are still unanswered. For instance, how effective would it be for redheads, whose melanocytes produce the less effective form of melanin, red-yellow pheomelanin?

For more information, see the entry on Melanotan in Sunless Tanning: Facts and Myths.

Quote:
"Melanotan I and II are both synthetic hormones of melanocyte stimulating hormone that were created, synthesized and developed at The University of Arizona and the Arizona Cancer Center. Melanotan I is a linear, full length peptide [containing all 13 amino acids]. Melanotan II is a shortened, circular version of the same peptide. Both have sunless tanning capabilities but because Melanotan II had spontaneous erection as a side effect, it is not being further developed as a tanning agent. It is now being evaluated as an erectile dysfunction drug."

Any claim by a tanning pill manufacturer that their pill ingredients stimulate the production of melanin is false. Not even Melanotan, which has been proven to stimulate melanin when taken by injection, will do this when taken orally.

Sounds experimental still? I don't know the safety of it or anyone that can guarantee its safety.

It's because you don't have the skin pigment darling. I don't have it either, so don't feel bad.

I'm not getting into any tanning beds or machines to force a tan when I don't have the pigment to tan me. Why would anyone want to age their skin and be ugly later on in life?

It used to bother me, but not anymore. If I want one that bad, I'll just use the tanning sprays and preserve my skin.

I'm still not sure about them MSH injections. If they could figure out how to micronize it and apply topically, and use DMSO to drive it in, then maybe...

Reich named this energy 'Orgone'

Reich, pleased with the rediscovery of bions found that a side effect of observing occurred. His eyes started to burn and caused a form of Conjunctivitis along with tanning of the skin. He tried numerous methods to shield, protect and contain the bions and by 1940 Reich had constructed his first 'accumulator'. This consisted of a six-sided box which was then insulated alternately with organic and inorganic substances (glass wool, steel wool, upson board and galvanised sheet iron). Reich claimed that the particles he could see in the microscope were actually an unidentified energy or radiation form which in turn caused the conjunctivitis and tanning.

Orgone Energy Accumulators ( ORAC )
Which were square boxes made from layers of wood, iron and aluminium. They were used to trap Orgone energy, which could warm and tan skin, and relieve pain from a burn. The organic wood material sucked up Orgone energy while the metals reflected it.
