There once was a little bird that decided not to fly south with its flock in the autumn. Everything was so nice and colorful that he told his friends to leave without him. In a few weeks, the north wind began to blow, and sleet and snow began to fall. The little bird tried desperately to fly south, but his wings iced up and he crash-landed next to a barn. Just when he was about to freeze to death, a cow happened to come by and dropped a pile of manure on him. Pretty soon the warm manure thawed him out, and he felt so good he began to chirp. A cat in the barn came to check out the chirping, discovered the little bird, and ate him.
This story has three morals. First, everyone who drops a pile of manure on your head is not necessarily your enemy. Second, eveyone who gets you out of a pile of manure is not necessarily your friend. Third, if your warm and happy in a pile of manure, keep your mouth shut...
It would appear that the vast majority of the citizens of the industrialized world are warm, and happy in the environmental equivalent of a pile of manure, and they're keeping their mouths shut . The ersatz comfort of modern "living" tends to desensitize people and hold them in a lethargic state. It might be noted that it is easier to control them in this state. Just as surely as their thermostat on the wall keeps their climate artificially tuned, the hollow food grown on empty soil keeps their bodies and mind dull, unproductive in manufacturing the chemical compounds of the brain and endocrine system. To quote Surgeon General Parran, "Many well-to-do Americans who can eat what they like are so badly fed as to be physically inferior and mentally dull."
Enfeebled as such, in this disconnected life, people actually don't want to know what is happening in reality, so they safely read about unreality in supermarket tabloids and popular magazines, which, no matter how outrageous the stories, require no response or action on their parts. They gulp their sugared pop and nibble their hydrogenated chips, oblivious to the garbage and radiation that infiltrates their water, their air, their soil. Pathetically, the biggest fear is "losing it all."
Afraid of dying, the fear of truly living is greater.
The feeling seems to be, "There is only so much of the 'good life,' not everyone can have it, and I am lucky to have my share. I don't know Mother Earth, but I'll rest my soul in the bosom of Mother General Mills, or Mother Exxon, or Mother Squibb, or Mother Del Monte, or Mother Du Pont, or Mother Safeway." Of course, loyalty to these "mothers" is as deep as a paycheck or discount coupon.
It's not life's design that there should be scarcity and deficiency. A look at a single human cell reveals a scientific wonder of biochemical dynamism, of manufacture and transportation, of efficient operation and abundant energy production, and of perfect waste management. As humans, we are composed of more than 100 trillion of these extraordinary, life-teeming cells. As wondrous and powerful as these cells are, it would seem that, as humans and a society, we have experienced less than the sum of our own parts.
We want prosperity, but that word should truly mean "prospirit." Whenever there's poverty, deficiency, and disease, there is a broken spirit. The prosperity of the land - or lack of it - reflects the spirit of the people, their healing, and their consciousness.
"Our individual immune systems are inescapably linked to the planet Earth, of whose substance we are made."
More than 2,700 years ago, prophet Isaiah [as many prophets and apostles have] expressed his vision of the last days of life on Earth. He saw the depleted, demineralized soil and the air pollution. He declared, "For the heavens shall vanish away like smoke [he had no word for smog], and the earth shall wax old like a garment [threadbare of material that binds it], and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner [the inhabitants would die in the same condition the Earth was in, demineralized like a worn-out garment]." Is. 51:6
Though the call is not to go 'back' to the Native Americans' way of life, we must nonetheless understand the wisom of how these original ecologists allowed for integration and care of the land (forests, soils, grassland, and water) to be so excellent that ships bringing masses poured over here from Europse, Asia, and Africa. The wisdom of living ecologists had maintained the land in sustainable harmony.
Ultimately, we are "human" beings, i.e., "humus" - soil beings. Made of the Earth, we have the inherent strength, beauty, and dignity of the Earth in us. Look at our plantet from outer space, marvel at its beauty; then remember, "I am made of that." When we act to protect the Earth, we respond to the deepest and most God-loving instict in us. Suppress that, and we turn our backs on our own Mother. It is no sacrifice to save our Mother. All our health and longevity derives from the Earth, her substance and energy, and not the artificial "cures" of those who tread heavily upon her.
Answers are known, and they're available. If we move swiftly with a single purpose, we can restore the planet and ourselves. The planet needs healthy, strong souls who are going to be able to steer the sick and dying ship back in the right direction. To do this, we must begin with ourselves and align our values accordingly.
~ Dr. Bernard Jensen
In memory of his tireless global teaching of the principles of wholeness, health, and caring in the healing arts.
"As Earth bleeds, so bleeds her people. As Earth is raped, so are her people. As Earth is healed, so are her people."
