Homeopaths have found that discharge symptoms in the healing mode tend to follow a specific order, or progress, namely
HERING'S LAW OF CURE
1. Symptoms move from the inside to the outside of the body (mucous in the lungs is coughed up; toxic matter from deep within the system comes out as boils or rashes).
2. Symptoms move from upper part to lower part of the body (medication that affects the kidneys, such as steroids, can be discharged by a rash on the legs).
3. Symptoms relating to chronic conditions disappear in the reverse order of their apperance; the ones that emerged latest leave first and the earlier ones re-emerge and then leave last. This means that long after we set out on a healing path, we might re-live symptoms of very old problems if these were suppressed or incorrectly treated. Their re-emergence (also known as retracing), if treated naturally and allowed to follow its course, would only mean that the body is healing itself. For example, if you used to cough a lot as a child and took medicine and then developed asthma, when you go into a healing mode, you may have a brief flare-up of the asthma, and later - even several years later - have a coughing episode that is, in fact, a "retracing" of your childhood condition.
To the above three rules formulated by Constantine Hering (1800-1880), John Garvy, N.D., has added two more:
4. A feeling of well-being precedes a healing crisis.
5. There is also a feeling of well-being at the core during the crisis; that is, deep down inside it feels 'ok'.
These last two are the key to differentiating a healing crisis from a sickness that we might be perpetuating: A sickness feels like something is definitely wrong. IF you are not sure, Check with a Health Professional.
The more the body has to clean up, the stronger and/or longer will be the discharge reactions. They will also be more pronounced if the change in diet is abrupt, less so if it's gradual. Physical activity will speed up the cleansing process.
Some foods, notably sugar, meat, coffee, and milk products, will not be fully eliminated unless completely abstained from. That is, as long as you have even one teaspoon of sugar in your tea once a day & no sugar at any other time, the addiction is maintained & withdrawal does not occur. Should withdrawal symptoms become too uncomfortable, they can sometimes be stopped by the "hair of the dog" method: a sip of coffee will eliminate a coffee-withdrawal headache. In fact, this is what keeps addictions going. The addictive substance (sugar, coffee, drugs) "cures" the discomfort produced as the body tries to clean out that same subtstance. Stopping the discharge may prolong the agony, as the healing process is arrested for a few days but this is better than discontinuing the program altogether.
Keep in mind that not everyone will experience the same discharges, nor will they last the same length of time for everyone. Use the Elimintaion and Symptom Chart (seen below) only to orient yourself, so that you know what to expect. When well-intentioned friends want to know why you have a cold if your eating healthier foods, just smile and say, "Because I am getting better!"
Think of what happens when you have crutches taken away from you after you've used it for a while, even through your legs are perfectly good: Because the use of the crutch has weakened them, you will be a little wobbly until you regain your normal strength. The symptoms, then, are the wobbliness; they will go away once the body becomes strong again.
ELIMINATION AND SYMPTOM CHART
When You Eliminate - You May Encounter - For
Sugar - Tiredness, drowsiness, depression, feelings of alienation, lack of coordination - 1 to 5 days
Coffee - Headaches, shakiness, nervousness - 1 to 10 days
Alcohol - Tension, inability to relax - 2 to 5 days or more, depending on the extent of the drinking
Milk and Milk Products - -Mucous elimination through skin, sinus, mucous membranes, lungs, sex organs - Starting up to 3 months after the food was stopped ---for a year or two
Meats, Fats, Protein - Foul body odor, coated tongue, feelings of being toxic, skin eruptions - Varies: 1 to 4 weeks with fast, 6 to 10 months for deeper accumulations
There are ten categories of symptoms; you may experience only some of these, and the healthier your general condition, the fewer there will be:
1. General fatigue
2. Pains and aches
3. Fever, chills, coughs
4. Abnormal sweating & frequent urination
5. Skin discharges & unusual body odours
6. Diarrhea or constipation
7. Temporary decrease in sexual desire & vitality
8. Temporary cessation of menstruation
9. Mental irritability, 'foggyness'
10. Other minor transitory symptoms; restless dreams, minor hair loss, feeling of coldness
Note: Some natural-healing philosophies are overridingly concerned with continuous "cleansing." This kind of obsession can be paralyzing and destructive. Hauschka points out: "Fear of an 'impure state' leads to a body cult that easily degenerates into the worst kind of materialism. The frequent washing and irrigations of the outer and inner man actually reflect a lack of confidence in the power of the soul and spirit to work in an enlivening and healing way in body functions." What we can hope for, however, is a well-functioning body that moves waste matter along smoothly and disposes of it promptly and efficiently, before it has had time to harden, putrefy, or turn toxic.
Nature does most of the work for us ~ homeostasis.

The Major Organs of Elimination
Though every cell of the body has "workers" that assist in removing waste from the cell, there are organs that specialize in "waste management". Below are these major organs and ways that you can assist these organs during the initial detoxification period.
Colon: The "solid waste management" organ of the body. Individuals have been found with up to Eighty (80) pounds of mucous and 'rubber-like' waste impacted along the wall of this organ!
Colon hydrotherapies that use wheatgrass (or other fresh dark green) juice implants are highly effective in reducing cleaning reactions. A secondary support can be taking psyllium-husks and water (take a lot to avoid constipation/cramping).
Kidneys: The "water management" organ. The kidneys are responsible for keeping the chemisty of the blood alkaline by filtering out the dissolved acid wastes.
Assist kidneys by drinking plenty of purified water and fresh alkaline juices. Consume a minimum of one-half ounce per pound of body weight on a daily basis. Finish drinking liquids at least three hours before retiring to avoid those nightly visits to the bathroom.
Liver: The "recycling center". This organ sorts out the "bad" (toxins) from the good and directs the toxins to the appropriate organ for exit out of the body. If the principal elimination organ is backed up, the liver re-directs the toxins the best it can.
Wheatgrass and blue-green algea (both high in chlorophyll = magnesium), offer a direct "shot in the arm" to the liver and help pull toxins out of the blood more quickly.
Lungs: The blood's "air purifier." The lungs introduce oxygen directly into the bloodstream, and at the same time remove waste gases that are produced in every cell of our body during the Krebs (energy-producing) cycle.
Deep breathing from the diaphram is most important. It's also important to have oxygen available while breathing - this is easier said than done, especially living in a city. Regular aerobic exercise in an oxygen-rich environment provides an easy solution. If you are a conditioned shallow breather, there are methods available to loosen up.
Lymph: The major "garbage arteries" in the body. This intricate network of tubing is the one that carries the bulk of the waste from the cells of the body to the final elimination organs. Major lymphatic glands (holding tanks) are the appendix, spleen, thymus, and tonsils. These glands do tend to swell during detoxification.
Regular exercise (both aerobic and resistance) and massage are benificial to the lymphatic system. Drink plenty of fluids to help dilute and transport the toxins through the body. Decrease the intake of fats and oils.
Skin: The "temperature/humidity controller." The skin is the elimination organ with the largest surface area. In addition to regulating temperature and body moisture content, the skin often functions as a backup for the other elimination organs. Skin disorders are example of this function.
Exercise, dry skin brushing, sauna, massage, and plenty of fluids all encourage the skin in elimination detoxing.
