PREPAREDNESS FOR SURVIVAL: Thyroid Blockers: Potassium Iodide vs Potassium Iodate And What Is Currently Available
Here is some information that may be helpful in tracking down an appropriate “thyroid blocker” to protect you from cesium-137 and other radiation associated with nuclear power plant releases that may affect the U.S. in the near or distant future. There is a conflict of opinion between the two articles. “ki” – potassium iodide – is more readily available now than “KIO3″ – potassium iodate. KI has been around for decades and seems to have the edge in the opinion of the FDA and UN WHO. Considering the sources, you will have to use your discretion as to the best choice in the event that you have one before you. There are a number of current products listed at the bottom that you can track down via searches. The western USA is likely to have the most direct effects to deal with in this round. More radiation mitigation tips will follow. – Greg Lynch
Potassium Iodide Dosage, Shelf Life and Sources
http://standeyo.com/News_Files/NBC/KI.html
December 23, 2002
What is the daily dosage required?
Current FDA guidelines call for the daily administration of 130 mg. of potassium iodide (KI)) for up to 14 days for adults and children over 60 pounds. Smaller children should take one half tablet for 14 days.
Recent findings and the experience at Chernobyl (where 18 million children were given KI) suggest KI is even more effective than previously realized, and that thyroid blocking can take place at smaller doses. As a result, FDA is considering reducing the amount of the dosage, and is studying dose levels as small as 16 mg. for infants and 32 mgs. for small children for shorter periods. Currently, however, package instructions should be followed in the event of a large release of radioactive iodine from a power plant accident or a nuclear weapon.
How long is the shelf life of potassium iodide?
Potassium Iodide is inherently stable. If kept dry in an unopened container at room temperature, it can be expected to last indefinitely.
Potassium Iodide works by “saturating” the thyroid with stable iodide so it will not absorb radioactive iodine that might be released in an accident. Under current dosing guidelines, a fully saturated thyroid would be protected for up to one month, which is long enough for radioactive iodine (which has a half life of 8 days) to disappear from the environment.
What is the US Government position on providing KI to workers and the public in the event of another nuclear emergency?
The U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) does not dispute the safety or effectiveness of KI. In fact, they require nuclear power plants to stockpile it to protect plant workers, and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) plans call for KI to protect those individuals who would be unable to be evacuated in a nuclear accident especially those under the care of the government (such as prisoners or patients in government hospitals).
But the NRC is resisting the calls for a national stockpile of KI, claiming it is “unnecessary.” As a result, the US remains the only major nuclear power that does not have a supply to protect its citizens. Recently, to counter the widespread criticism of this policy, the government announced it had established a “national stockpile” of KI. This news was welcomed by many in the scientific community. However, at a recent meeting, the NRC admitted that its operational “national stockpile” consisted of only 2500 tablets, not even enough for 200 people.
As a reaction to criticism by US medical groups and the World Health Organization, the NRC has announced it would make KI available (free of charge) to state or local governments desiring it. Again, this news was greeted with enthusiasm. However, following this announcement, the NRC “clarified” its position, and now says it will provide KI only to those people living in communities within the 10 mile “EPZ” (Emergency Planning Zone) surrounding nuclear plants. Given that most casualties in a nuclear accident would take place more than 50 miles from the plant (following Chernobyl, thousands of cases of childhood thyroid cancer developed hundreds of miles away), the current NRC position is probably of questionable value.

Potassium Iodate or Potassium Iodine – Which Do I Use?
I contacted at least 12 different companies and agencies regarding the difference in using Potassium Iodide and Potassium Iodate. The most unbiased answer came from Marcia Carpenter (CARPENTIER.MARCIA@epamail.epa.gov), Radiological Emergency Response Team U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Marcia writes:
“In response to your question about potassium iodate versus iodide, here are the basics:
Potassium Iodate (KIO3) and Potassium Iodide (KI) are not the same.
KIO3 – molecular weight 214.00 is 18.27 % K, 22.43 % O and 59.30 % I, so you would have to administer 168.63 milligrams of KIO3 to deliver 100 milligrams of iodine.
KI – molecular weight 166.01 is 23.55 % K and 76.45 % I, so you would have to administer 130.81 milligrams of KI to deliver 100 milligrams of iodine.
Both compounds are soluble in water, but KI is very soluble. KI is much less stable than KIO3. When KI breaks down, it becomes yellow due to release of iodine and it may produce small amounts of iodate. When iodate breaks down, it also produces a yellow color from iodine. Both compounds should be protected from light and moisture to improve stability.
As to which is preferred for use in the event of nuclear accidents, I can refer you to the following quote and its associated reference. The quote is from a World Health Organization (WHO) and International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) working document entitled “Guidelines for Stable Iodine Prophylaxis Following Nuclear Accidents,” dated 10/19/98.
And I quote…
“Stable iodine can be used as either potassium iodide or potassium iodate. Potassium iodide (KI) is the preferred alternative, since potassium iodate (KIO3) has the disadvantage of being a stronger intestinal irritant.”
Since this document is still in draft, you might want to go to the original work they cite. It is:
Rubery ED. Practical aspects of prophylactic stable iodine usage. In: Iodine Prophylaxis Following Nuclear Accidents — Proceedings of a Joint WHO/CEC Workshop, July 1988. Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1990. pp 141-150.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently doing a reassessment of various recommendations on this issue, but their work is not yet published.”
B&A Products
website states:
“Potassium Iodate is a superior form of Potassium Iodide (KI) because of extended shelf life and lack of bitter taste. The extra molecule of oxygen in Potassium Iodate (KIO3), can guarantee the Iodate’s continued freshness without adding stabilizers.”
Additional research, information and sources
KI4U – Excellent in-depth FAQ
Conclusion – either Potassium Iodate (KIO3) or Potassium Iodide (KI) is fine.

FDA Approved brands of Potassium Iodide
Follow this link to read chart of “approved” brands
http://www.nukepills.com/brands_approved.htm
Only three brands of potassium iodide (KI) have been approved by the FDA for radiation exposure – IOSAT, ThyroShield and Thyrosafe. Any other brands sold for radiation exposure are not tested and approved by the FDA and are in violation of The 1997 Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that states: “No person shall introduce or deliver for introduction into interstate commerce any new drug, unless an approval filed pursuant to subsection (b) or (j) of this section is effective with respect to said drug”..
To verify what brands of Potassium Iodide (or any drug) have FDA approval visit the FDA Orange Book. Type in Potassium Iodide, click on “OTC” and then “submit”.
Potassium Iodate (KIO3) has not been tested and approved by the FDA for anything, let alone radiation exposure. Anyone selling this drug for radiation exposure is doing so in violation of federal law (see above). The FDA has issued warning letters to sellers and manufacturers of unapproved potassium iodide and potassium iodate. Unfortunately, the FDA’s policing of this matter has waned. Many of the websites are still up and running. Some state their product is FDA approved when it isn’t!
To verify that Potassium Iodate is not FDA approved, click on this link for the FDA Orange Book. Type in Potassium Iodate, click on “OTC” and then “submit”. None are tested and approved by the FDA.

How to Detox Your Body of Depleted Uranium Residues, the Effects of Radiation, and Radioactive Contamination
It’s sad but true that there are thousands of scientific references and medical studies out there on the fact that radiation and radioactivity can harm you, yet despite millions of dollars spent by the government to study radiation, virtually nothing is available about a detoxification diet or nutritional supplements you might use if you are exposed to radioactive contamination.
Here’s some of the information we do know from the only book in the world on the topic. Keep this information in the back of your mind as it may one day help save you or someone you know.
Most people are aware taking potassium iodide (KI) or potassium iodate (KIO3) tablets will help block your thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine should there ever be a dirty bomb explosion or nuclear power plant mishap such as the Three Mile Island incident. In 1999, another such accident happened in Tokaimura, Japan where several individuals died from radiation exposure in a fuel processing facility.
What people don’t recognize is that potassium iodide or iodate tablets only protect the thyroid gland and do not provide protection from any other radiation exposure, so taking them should not give you a false sense of security. It’s important to detox your body after radioactive exposure!
One question is, what do you do if KI or KIO3 tablets aren’t available during an emergency? Interestingly enough, according to research by Ken Miller, health physicist at the Hershey Medical Center, he found that an adult could get a blocking dose of stable iodine by painting 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm approximately 2 hours prior to I-131 contamination. Potassium iodine tablets are best, but if they’re not available this is the next best thing.
An entirely different problem arises after you’ve been exposed to radioactive contamination because now you have to get rid of any radioactive particles you may have ingested through the air you breathed, water you drank, or food you ate. Some people suggest Epson salt, Clorox or clay baths to remove any residues on your skin and to leach out any heavy metals you may have absorbed, but the big worry is internal contamination. To gain some insights into what to do, we have to turn to the story of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.
At the time of the atomic bombing, Tatsuichiro Akizuki, M.D. was Director of the Department of Internal Medicine at St. Francis’s Hospital in Nagasaki and he fed his staff and patients a strict diet of brown rice, miso and tamari soy soup, wakame, kombu and other seaweed, Hokkaido pumpkin, and sea salt. He also prohibited the consumption of sugar and sweets since they suppress the immune system.
By imposing this diet on his staff and patients, no one succumbed to radiation poisoning whereas the occupants of hospitals located much further away from the blast incident suffered severe radiation fatalities.
Much of this positive result has to do with the fact that the sea vegetables contain substances that bind radioactive particles and escort them out of the body. This is why seaweed sales usually skyrocket after radiation disasters, and why various seaweeds and algae are typically used to treat radiation victims.
In Chernobyl, for instance, spirulina was used to help save many children from radiation poisoning. By taking 5 grams of spirulina a day for 45 days, the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk even proved that children on this protocol experienced enhanced immune systems, T-cell counts and reduced radioactivity. Israeli scientists have since treated Chernobyl children with doses of natural beta carotene from Dunaliella algae and proved that it helped normalize their blood chemistry. Chlorella algae, a known immune system builder and heavy metal detoxifier, has also shown radioprotective effects. Because they bind heavy metals, algae should therefore be consumed after exposure to any type of radioactive contamination.
In 1968 a group of Canadian researchers at McGill University of Montreal, headed by Dr. Stanley Skoryna, actually set out to devise a method to counteract the effects of nuclear fallout. The key finding from their studies was that sea vegetables contained a polysaccharide substance, called sodium alginate, which selectively bound radioactive strontium and eliminated it from the body.
Sodium alginate is found in many seaweeds, especially kelp, and since that time the Russians have been seriously researching the use of their own kelps from Vladivlostok, from which they have isolated the polysaccharide U-Fucoidan, which is another radioactive detoxifier. Because miso soup was so effective in helping prevent radiation sickness, the Japanese have also done research identifying the presence of an active ingredient called zybicolin, discovered in 1972, which acts as a binding agent to also detoxify and eliminate radioactive elements (such as strontium) and other pollutants from the body.
The kelps and algaes aren’t the only natural foods with radio-detoxifying effects. In terms of fluids to drink, black and green tea have shown “radioprotective effects” whether consumed either before or after exposure to radiation. This anti-radiation effect was observed in several Japanese studies, and studies from China also suggest that the ingredients in tea are radioactive antagonists.
In short, after any sort of radioactive exposure you want to be eating seaweeds and algaes along with almost any type of commercial heavy metal chelating formula to bind radioactive particles and help escort them out of the body. Whether you’re worried about depleted uranium, plutonium or other isotopes, this is the wise thing to do which can possibly help, and certainly won’t hurt. Many nutritional supplements have been developed for the purpose of detoxifying heavy metals, most of which contain the algaes and plant fibers and other binding substances.
Basically, an anti-radiation diet should focus on the following foods:
· Miso soup
· Spirulina, chlorella and the algaes (kelp, etc.)
· Brassica vegetables and high beta carotene vegetables
· Beans and lentils
· Potassium, calcium and mineral rich foods
· High nucleotide content foods to assist in cellular repair including spirulina, chlorella, algae, yeast, sardines, liver, anchovies and mackerel
· Cod liver oil and olive oil
· Avoid sugars and sweets and wheat
· A good multivitamin/multimineral supplement
Yet another benefit of the sea vegetables rarely discussed is their high mineral content, which is a bonus in the case of radioactive exposure. Consuming natural iodine, such as in the seaweeds
, helps prevent the uptake of iodine-131 while iron inhibits the absorption of plutonium-238 and plutonium-239. Vitamin B-12 inhibits cobalt-60 uptake (used in nuclear medicine), zinc inhibits zinc-65 uptake and sulfur is preventative for sulfur-35 (a product of nuclear reactors) incorporation by the body.
Since nuclear workers are potentially exposed to radioactive sulfur, this means that workers in the atomic power industry need a higher content of sulfur in their diet. MSM supplements provide a source of dietary sulfur, but thiol supplements such as cysteine, lipoic acid and glutathione serve double-duty in this area because they help detoxify the body and attack all sorts of other health problems as well.
The immune system is usually hit hard after radiation exposure, and a number of steps can be taken to help prevent opportunistic infections after a radioactive incident. Though the full dimensions of the protective mechanism is still unknown, Siberian ginseng is one form of ginseng that exerts a definite radioprotective effect and has been demonstrated to lessen the side effects of radiation. It was widely distributed by the Soviet Union to those exposed Chernobyl radiation and is commonly used to help cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.
Consuming Reishi mushrooms is another proven way to bolster your immune system after radiation exposure and helps reduce the damage from radiation. It’s been used to decrease radiation sickness in animals and help them recover faster after potentially deadly exposure.
Panax ginseng has prevented hemorrhaging after radiation exposure, prevents bone marrow death and stimulates blood cell formation, so it’s another supplement to add to one’s protocol. In short, yeasts, beta glucans, bee pollen and various forms of ginseng have all been shown to bolster the immune system after radiation incidents. In terms of radiation burns, aloe vera has a proven ability to treat serious radiation burns and offers other radioprotective effects, and can easily be grown in your house.
The amino acid L-Glutamine can be used to help repair the intestine in case of the gastrointestinal syndrome usually suffered due to radiation exposure, and a variety of substances can help rebuild blood cells to prevent hematopoietic syndrome. Those particular foods include beet juice, liver extract, spleen extract, and shark alkyglycerols. Most oncologists don’t know that shark liver oil, with alkyglycerols, can help platelet counts rebound in days.
Depleted uranium is currently in the journalistic spotlight because US weapons are made from this material, and after being fired leave a legacy of depleted uranium dust in the environment, which anyone can absorb. Because the kidneys are usually the first organs to show chemical damage upon uranium exposure, military manuals suggest doses or infusions of sodium bicarbonate to help alkalinize the urine if this happens. This makes the uranyl ion less kidney-toxic and promotes excretion of the nontoxic uranium carbonate complex.
In areas contaminated by depleted uranium dusts, it therefore makes sense to switch to drinking slightly alkaline water and to favor a non-acidic diet to assist in this detoxification. Any of the heavy metal detoxifiers, such as miso soup, chlorella, spirulina and seaweeds, are also commonsense warranted.
Another thing you can do is use homeopathics for radiation exposure. People commonly argue over whether homeopathics work or not, but if you assume the position that they produce no results whatsoever then you must also assume that they certainly won’t hurt you, which means the only loss from using them is a few dollars. Frankly, there are countless cases and double-blind studies where homeopathic tinctures do provoke physical healing effects in the body. Therefore they are a viable adjunct treatment option. One homeopathic, in particular, is URANIUM NITRICUM (nitrate of uranium) which homeopaths suggest should be used in cases of depleted uranium exposure or uranium poisoning. Not just soldiers or civilians exposed to battlefield dusts, but uranium miners and radiation workers may find it quite useful.
While we’ve discussed just a few of the many supplements and protocols you can use to help detox the body of the lingering results of radioactive contamination, including the residues of depleted uranium, the last thing that might be of interest is that there is a plant that is a natural geiger counter. The spiderwort plant is so sensitive to changes in radiation levels (its petals change color upon exposure) that it’s often used as a natural radiation detector (dosimeter), just as they use canaries in mines as detectors of poisonous gas. Some people like knowing that they have an ongoing monitoring system for radiation in the environment, and this is just another tip available in “How to Neutralize the Harmful Effects of Radiation or Radioactive Exposure”
Please Note: This is important! Be aware if you are drinking fluoridated/chlorinated water and are eating a lot of food products with bromine (such as bromiliated oils and bread with bromilated flour) These are halogens. These fluorine/fluoride and bromine/bromide halogens are blocking the iodine receptors in the thyroid gland. These must be moved out before the iodine gets in the thyroid gland. This is a repost from BeautifulDreamer
http://www.squidoo.com/iodinehealth
Are you tired, run-down, listless?
Do you poop out at parties?
Are you unpopular?
The answer to all your problems is in this little bottle: IODINE.
This lens is about iodine and other ways of feeding and keeping your thyroid and other glands happy. Since starting iodine myself, I’ve discovered that I’m actually awake when I wake up in the mornings, not to mention getting things done around the house I formerly had no patience or energy for!
I recently started on potassium iodide and within a day or so, I became restless and took all the cans out of my kitchen cabinet. Some of them had been there for years! When my husband came home, he said, “What happened?” I threw out three loads of cans and organized the rest.
A couple of days after that, I became dissatisfied with the refrigerator. It was time to clean! I took everything out and when my daughter came home, she said, “What happened?”
The next day I scrubbed another part of the fridge and continued to freak out my family. Then I tackled the stack of papers I’d been avoiding.
“Are you on crack?” my husband asked, laughing.
“No,” I said, “It’s iodine, baby!”
Round Up the Usual Suspects
Recognize any of these, like Brain Fog?
Below is a list of common symptoms of low thyroid or hypothyroidism:
Fatigue and weakness
Low basal temperature (cold intolerance)
Dry and coarse skin
Hair loss
Cold hands and feet
Weight gain
Insomnia
Constipation
Depression
Poor memory, forgetfulness, dementia
Nervousness and tremors
Immune system problems
Heavy menstrual periods, polycystic ovaries
Prostate cysts
Fibromyalgia
Fibrocystic breast disease
“Brain fog”
Insulin resistance, diabetes
Fatty liver
High cholesterol
Poor cognition or cretinism in children
And more, unfortunately
Introducing the Halogen Family
(A slightly dysfunctional family at that!)
Here are the four largest halogens and their relative atomic weights:
Fluorine . . . . . . . . 19
Chlorine . . . . . . . . 35.5
Bromine . . . . . . . . 80
Iodine . . . . . . . . .127
Halogens with a lower atomic weight displace those with a higher atomic weight, but not vice-versa. So while bromine can displace iodine, bromine can’t displace chlorine. But fluorine, chlorine, and bromine can ALL displace iodine!
Think about it . . . do you drink or shower in chlorinated water? And does your community add fluoride to your water? Do you ever eat white bread products? Eat a lot of table salt? Drink supermarket milk? How about swim in pools or spas?
These all matter because they’re sources of iodine-displacing halogens. Table salt is sodium chloride, so just eating fast food with its high sodium content can do it! Swimming pools and spas are usually treated with chlorine for their sanitizer, and sometimes also bromine. Decades past, iodine was used as a dough conditioner, but now bromine as taken its place, as well as is used to bleach wheat flour that blinding white color. Bromine is also hiding in many soft drinks, such as Gatorade and Mountain Dew – look for “brominated vegetable oil” on the label. Iodine was once used to sanitize cows’ udders, but now bromine is used commercially. And fluoride is hard to avoid, unless you deliberately choose toothpaste without fluoride or drink water filtered to remove it.
This is just one reason many are iodine deficient, because these other displacing halogens have been knocking their iodine brother out of the picture.
So What Do Halogens Have to Do with the Thyroid?
They can make for a chunkier neck!
Two-thirds of the body’s iodine is found in the thyroid gland. Iodine is found in every cell in the body and the thyroid is only one of the organs in the body that stores iodine. Iodine is used by every hormone receptor in the body. The absence of iodine causes a hormonal dysfunction that can be seen with practically every hormone inside the body, all of which interact with the thyroid.
So as you see, if the more toxic halides are knocking the iodine out of your system, your entire body suffers, but especially the thyroid.
The woman pictured above could use some iodine supplementation and a little thyroid TLC.
Filter Halogens from Your Water
A fluoride filter will generally also filter out chlorine and bromine – a nice thing for the thyroid!
Where Do I Find Iodine?
Enjoy Iodine-Rich Foods
Good Dietary Sources of Iodine:
Seaweed (like nori, used to wrap sushi rolls)
Kelp or dulse powder
Unrefined sea salts, iodized sea salt
Deep-water fish (wild caught is safer for you)
Shellfish
Fish sauce (used in Thai cooking)
Eggs (the yolks contain the iodine here)
Real butter
Turkey
Some of the less common foods on this list you may find in a health food store or an Asian market – both are fun places to shop! I once took my children to a Japanese market and there was an entire aisle devoted to the various seaweeds. My girls took home different flavors of nori, including teriyaki, some wrapped in individual portions! Kids actually enjoy nori and my daughter’s friends at school would beg her for some.
The following may be good sources of iodine, IF the soil they are grown in is rich in iodine:
Baked potato (with the peel)
Navy beans
Radishes
Asparagus
Carrots
Tomatoes
Spinach and other greens
Rhubarb
Peas
Strawberries
Mushrooms
Lettuce
Bananas
Onions
Try to get organic produce as there is a better chance of the soils having been enriched. You also may be able to taste the difference!
And while coconut is not rich in iodine, it does feed the thyroid! I use expeller-pressed coconut oil because it is odorless and flavorless (the rest of my family is not hep on coconut like I am). But those who enjoy the flavor of coconut can use the “extra-virgin” variety of coconut oil. And don’t forget shredded coconut, and now coconut flour, which is a gluten-free flour.
But beware, there are foods that are unfriendly to the thyroid because they block the uptake of iodine! Check it out!
Avoid Goitrogenic Foods
Goitrogenic foods block iodine absorption. Enjoy in moderation:
Kale, cabbage, peanuts, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi, and turnips. (Yeah, I know, limiting the Brussels sprouts is going to be hard!)
COMPLETELY AVOID ALL SOY PRODUCTS!
Not only is soy highly goitrogenic, it’s also estrogenic! I avoid it like the plague. So unless you ladies really want extra estrogen or guys want less testosterone, forget it.
Actual Iodine Supplementation
It gets stronger as the list gets longer
Dulse tablets or powder
Kelp tablets or powder
Liquid iodine, such as Lugol’s solution, Iosol, or nascent iodine
Iodine tablets, such as potassium iodide
Glandular bovine or porcine thyroid supplements
But how do you know if you need a supplement? This part is up to you! Do you see your neck a big pudgier than before? Do you have any of the symptoms listed in the first section? Below I’ll give you a couple of free to inexpensive tests you can do at home to see if iodine supplementation may help you.
Note: Do NOT take tincture of iodine orally! It can be used as an antiseptic for external first aid, but please don’t swallow it!
A Word About L-Tyrosine
Tyrosine is an amino acid that helps the body utilize iodine. It’s found in diary products, lima beans, bananas, almonds, sesame seeds, poultry, and fish.
If you want to supplement with this amino acid, take L-tyrosine on an empty stomach with water or juice 30 minutes before a meal. It is most effective taken with 25-mg of Vitamin B6. Do not take L-tyrosine with proteins such as milk or with any other amino acids, because the other amino acids would compete with the L-tyrosine. Ask your doctor if you should supplement.
Consider the Thyroid-Adrenal Axis
It’ll keep you from burning your adrenals out . . .
The thyroid and all the other endocrine glands affect one other. If you feel you may have chronic fatigue or other symptoms of adrenal fatigue, it would be a good idea to feed your adrenal glands as you feed your thyroid, because if you only pep up the thyroid, you could burn out your adrenals!
If you’d like to feed your adrenals, make sure you’re getting enough good-quality protein. (If you’re a vegetarian, make sure to combine your proteins so the amino acids dovetail in the same meal.)
Vitamin C concentrates in the adrenals, so get a good vitamin C product with amla or rosehips, as too much plain ascorbic acid can be hard on the adrenals!
You can also supplement with freeze-dried glandular adrenals from bovine sources. I like the kind from New Zealand.
B vitamins are also important in supporting the adrenals; brewer’s yeast tablets are a simple way to get extra Bs without paying an arm and a leg!
Avoid stimulants, like tobacco, caffeinated beverages and energy drinks, and too much sugar (yeah, I know, between losing the Brussels sprouts and now your coffee, I’m really on your list).
And make sure you get enough sleep! It is healing
Excess Iodine is Rare, But . . .
A few people break out in pimples from too much iodine, too fast! If this happens to you, cut back on your iodine supplement or go off of it for a few days before resuming, because what is happening is a detox reaction. It’s actually helping to get heavy metals like lead and mercury out of your system.
If you really want to lose any excess iodine sooner, eat some white bread, drink some fluorinated water, drink some Gatorade . . . you get the picture.
NOTE FROM MESSIAHMEWS: I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT THAT THEY POSTED ABOVE... “If you really want to lose any excess iodine sooner, eat some white bread, drink some fluorinated water, drink some Gatorade . . . you get the picture.”
DO NOT DO THAT! Eat some raw broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc… instead. You know the Goitrogenic Foods mentioned above.
A Simple Iodine Deficiency Test
Guess Which Twin is Deficient?
According to Bruce Fife, N.D. in “Eat Fat, Look Thin,” you can perform this simple test at home to see if you are iodine-deficient:
Paint a 1″ diameter area of 2% iodine solution (like Lugol’s, sold in most drug stores, or Amazon, in this lens) on your skin where it won’t show. If you are getting enough iodine, the red stain will remain for about 24 hours. If it disappears sooner, your body is deficient and is absorbing the iodine. The more deficient you are, the more quickly it will disappear.

And no sales tax, either!
You can get any variety of iodine products from Amazon at great prices – and perhaps no shipping!
The Basal Body Temperature Test
As originated by endocrinologist Dr. Broda Barnes
Take your early morning body temperature two days in a row. The night before the test, shake down a thermometer – be sure that it is shaken down and below 95 degrees.
On awakening the next morning, put the thermometer under your arm with the bulb in the armpit with no clothing between it and your armpit. Leave it there for 10 minutes (use snooze alarm if you wake up to an alarm). Just drowse for that time lying still.
After 10 minutes, take the thermometer out, and read it, writing down the result right away. (On waking, most people don’t think clearly and might forget the reading). This is known as your Early AM Basal Temperature, and the “normal” should be between 97.8 and 98.2.
This reading taken by armpit is somewhat lower and somewhat more accurate than by mouth. If you have a low-grade infection this may read higher than your “normal,” therefore if it is in that range above, you should repeat the above procedure every other day for a week or so. If you are a menstruating female, also do it on the 2nd and 3rd day of your period.
If your temperature is lower than the range, you are probably hypothyroid, and if higher, then you are probably hyperthyroid or you have an infection somewhere.
This Goes Beyond Iodine Supplementation
Please tell me you’d notice this on yourself!
I once saw a lady at a shopping center with a goiter just a bit bigger than the one in this picture. She should see an endocrinologist for some actual thyroid hormone.
I Think My Thyroid is Messed Up!
Now What Happens?
If you’ve tried supplementation, or your problem seems greater than can be helped by “over the counter,” get help.
Make an appointment with an endocrinologist who is not afraid of prescribing natural thyroid, such as Armour. Mary Shomon has a good resource for doctors in your area.
If you’re specifically interested in treatment with Armour thyroid, then click here to find a doctor close to you!
Before you see a doctor, though, it’s good to read up on the thyroid prior to your visit. It’ll help you to make more informed decisions.

Other Uses for Iodine
As Reported in Earthclinic.com:
Grow stronger nails: Paint the nails with white or colorless iodine daily. The nails become less brittle and grow longer.
Grow hair: Applied white iodine to the scalp to grow hair. There may be a crusty spot, but it will fall off and then small hairs can be seen. Be patient, this is a long process.
Remove skin tags: Apply twice daily. It may take several weeks, but after a while the skin tag will turn black and fall off. (Beats having the doctor burn it off, ow!)
(Regular iodine can be used as well, but this stains the skin and nails.)
Water purification: Iodine destroys bacteria, viruses and cysts, and its action is dependent on its concentration, the water temperature, and duration of contact. Use 8 drops/liter of 2% food-grade iodine, or 4 drops/liter of the 5% liquid iodine. It will destroy all pathogens if left for 10 minutes at 68 degrees. Lower concentrations and lower water temperatures will take longer.
If you add 50 mg of vitamin C powder after adding the iodine, the water is said to be nearly flavorless! Or add lemon or lime juice, but then don’t let anything contaminate the water after this. This can also be used in your pet’s water to keep it clean (it may also provide your pet with a boost!).
Skin wounds: Liquid potassium iodide, such as in Lugol’s solution, is antiseptic. Swab the area of concern with iodine and cover with a bandage. This is also good for burns as it lowers the risk of infection.
Get rid of your headache: Swab one or both wrists with iodine for headache relief.
White Iodine
it’s not easy to find!
For the Bomb Shelter
Forewarned is Forearmed!
Some people store high-dose tablets of iodine in case of a nuclear accident, which could cause the release of a radioactive iodine plume into the environment.
Radioactive iodine (I-131) is a by-product of nuclear fission that occurs only within a nuclear reactor or during detonation of a nuclear bomb. What makes radioactive iodine so dangerous is that the body cannot distinguish it from ordinary iodine. As a result, if swallowed (in contaminated food or water), or inhaled (it can remain in the atmosphere for days), it will be absorbed into the thyroid gland and may lead to thyroid cancer, especially in children.
Potassium iodide (KI) tablets were distributed en mass following the Chernobyl nuclear accident just hours after the explosion. In the years following the accident in areas where people received the drug, the incidence of thyroid cancer has not increased. But where potassium iodide was not distributed, previously rare forms of juvenile thyroid cancer have begun appearing at epidemic rates, with over 11,000 known cases. This number continues to rise and is not expected to peak until 2010.
What is interesting to me is that some doctors treat hyperthyroidism the same way – by giving the patient radioactive iodine to destroy the thyroid. One pill is all it takes. Then the patient is dependent upon thyroid medication for life. How sad, when hyperthyroid patients also respond well to iodine supplementation!
Something to think about. _________________

Potassium Iodide
http://digitalangeldonnadj.com/blog/?p=4926
Knowing what KI cannot do is also important.
KI cannot prevent radioactive iodine from entering the body. KI can protect only the thyroid from radioactive iodine, not other parts of the body. The thyroid gland cannot tell the difference between stable and radioactive iodine and will absorb both. KI works by blocking radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid. When a person takes KI, the stable iodine in the medicine gets absorbed by the thyroid. Because KI contains so much stable iodine, the thyroid gland becomes “full” and cannot absorb any more iodine either stable or radioactive for the next 24 hours.
Potassium Iodide (KI)
What is Potassium Iodide (KI)?
Potassium iodide (also called KI) is a salt of stable (not radioactive) iodine. Stable iodine is an important chemical needed by the body to make thyroid hormones. Most of the stable iodine in our bodies comes from the food we eat. KI is stable iodine in a medicine form. This fact sheet from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives you some basic information about KI. It explains what you should think about before you or a family member takes KI.
What does KI do?
Following a radiological or nuclear event, radioactive iodine may be released into the air and then be breathed into the lungs. Radioactive iodine may also contaminate the local food supply and get into the body through food or through drink. When radioactive materials get into the body through breathing, eating, or drinking, we say that “internal contamination” has occurred. In the case of internal contamination with radioactive iodine, the thyroid gland quickly absorbs this chemical. Radioactive iodine absorbed by the thyroid can then injure the gland. Because non-radioactive KI acts to block radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland, it can help protect this gland from injury.
What KI cannot do
Knowing what KI cannot do is also important. KI cannot prevent radioactive iodine from entering the body. KI can protect only the thyroid from radioactive iodine, not other parts of the body. KI cannot reverse the health effects caused by radioactive iodine once damage to the thyroid has occurred. KI cannot protect the body from radioactive elements other than radioactive iodine if radioactive iodine is not present, taking KI is not protective.
How does KI work?
The thyroid gland cannot tell the difference between stable and radioactive iodine and will absorb both. KI works by blocking radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid. When a person takes KI, the stable iodine in the medicine gets absorbed by the thyroid. Because KI contains so much stable iodine, the thyroid gland becomes “full” and cannot absorb any more iodine either stable or radioactive for the next 24 hours.
Iodized table salt also contains iodine; iodized table salt contains enough iodine to keep most people healthy under normal conditions. However, table salt does not contain enough iodine to block radioactive iodine from getting into your thyroid gland. You should not use table salt as a substitute for KI.
How well does KI work?
Knowing that KI may not give a person 100% protection against radioactive iodine is important. How well KI blocks radioactive iodine depends on
• how much time passes between contamination with radioactive iodine and the taking of KI (the sooner a person takes KI, the better), • how fast KI is absorbed into the blood, and
• the total amount of radioactive iodine to which a person is exposed.
Who should take KI?
The thyroid glands of a fetus and of an infant are most at risk of injury from radioactive iodine. Young children and people with low stores of iodine in their thyroid are also at risk of thyroid injury.
Infants (including breast-fed infants): Infants need to be given the recommended dosage of KI for babies (see How much KI should I take?). The amount of KI that gets into breast milk is not enough to protect breast-fed infants from exposure to radioactive iodine. The proper dose of KI given to a nursing infant will help protect it from radioactive iodine that it breathes in or drinks in breast milk.
Children: The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that all children internally contaminated with (or likely to be internally contaminated with) radioactive iodine take KI, unless they have known allergies to iodine. Children from newborn to 18 years of age are the most sensitive to the potentially harmful effects of radioactive iodine.
Young Adults: The FDA recommends that young adults (between the ages of 18 and 40 years) internally contaminated with (or likely to be internally contaminated with) radioactive iodine take the recommended dose of KI. Young adults are less sensitive to the effects of radioactive iodine than are children.
Pregnant Women: Because all forms of iodine cross the placenta, pregnant women should take KI to protect the growing fetus. However, pregnant women should take only one dose of KI following internal contamination with (or likely internal contamination with) radioactive iodine.
Breastfeeding Women: Women who are breastfeeding should take only one dose of KI if they have been internally contaminated with (or are likely to be internally contaminated with) radioactive iodine. Because radioactive iodine quickly gets into breast milk, CDC recommends that women internally contaminated with (or are likely to be internally contaminated with) radioactive iodine stop breastfeeding and feed their child baby formula or other food if it is available. If breast milk is the only food available for an infant, nursing should continue.
Adults: Adults older than 40 years should not take KI unless public health or emergency management officials say that contamination with a very large dose of radioactive iodine is expected. Adults older than 40 years have the lowest chance of developing thyroid cancer or thyroid injury after contamination with radioactive iodine. They also have a greater chance of having allergic reactions to KI.
When should I take KI?
After a radiologic or nuclear event, local public health or emergency management officials will tell the public if KI or other protective actions are needed. For example, public health officials may advise you to remain in your home, school, or place of work (this is known as “shelter-in-place”) or to evacuate. You may also be told not to eat some foods and not to drink some beverages until a safe supply can be brought in from outside the affected area. Following the instructions given to you by these authorities can lower the amount of radioactive iodine that enters your body and lower the risk of serious injury to your thyroid gland.
How much KI should I take?
The FDA has approved two different forms of KI tablets and liquid that people can take by mouth after a nuclear radiation emergency. Tablets come in two strengths, 130 milligram (mg) and 65 mg. The tablets are scored so they may be cut into smaller pieces for lower doses. Each milliliter (mL) of the oral liquid solution contains 65 mg of KI.
According to the FDA, the following doses are appropriate to take after internal contamination with (or likely internal contamination with) radioactive iodine:
• Adults should take 130 mg (one 130 mg tablet OR two 65 mg tablets OR two mL of solution).
• Women who are breastfeeding should take the adult dose of 130 mg.
• Children between 3 and 18 years of age should take 65 mg (one 65 mg tablet OR 1 mL of solution). Children who are adult size (greater than or equal to 150 pounds) should take the full adult dose, regardless of their age.
• Infants and children between 1 month and 3 years of age should take 32 mg (½ of a 65 mg tablet OR ½ mL of solution). This dose is for both nursing and non-nursing infants and children.
• Newborns from birth to 1 month of age should be given 16 mg (¼ of a 65 mg tablet or ¼ mL of solution). This dose is for both nursing and non-nursing newborn infants.
How often should I take KI?
A single dose of KI protects the thyroid gland for 24 hours. A one-time dose at the levels recommended in this fact sheet is usually all that is needed to protect the thyroid gland. In some cases, radioactive iodine might be in the environment for more than 24 hours. If that happens, local emergency management or public health officials may tell you to take one dose of KI every 24 hours for a few days. You should do this only on the advice of emergency management officials, public health officials, or your doctor. Avoid repeat dosing with KI for pregnant and breastfeeding women and newborn infants. Those individuals may need to be evacuated until levels of radioactive iodine in the environment fall.
Taking a higher dose of KI, or taking KI more often than recommended, does not offer more protection and can cause severe illness or death.
Medical conditions that may make it harmful to take KI
Taking KI may be harmful for some people because of the high levels of iodine in this medicine. You should not take KI if
• you know you are allergic to iodine (If you are unsure about this, consult your doctor. A seafood or shellfish allergy does not necessarily mean that you are allergic to iodine.) or
• you have certain skin disorders (such as dermatitis herpetiformis or urticaria vasculitis).
People with thyroid disease (for example, multinodular goiter, Graves’ disease, or autoimmune thyroiditis) may be treated with KI. This should happen under careful supervision of a doctor, especially if dosing lasts for more than a few days.
In all cases, talk to your doctor if you are not sure whether to take KI.
What are the possible risks and side effects of KI?
When public health or emergency management officials tell the public to take KI following a radiologic or nuclear event, the benefits of taking this drug outweigh the risks. This is true for all age groups. Some general side effects caused by KI may include intestinal upset, allergic reactions (possibly severe), rashes, and inflammation of the salivary glands.
When taken as recommended, KI causes only rare adverse health effects that specifically involve the thyroid gland. In general, you are more likely to have an adverse health effect involving the thyroid gland if you take a higher than recommended dose of KI, take the drug for several days, or have pre-existing thyroid disease.
Newborn infants (less than 1 month old) who receive more than one dose of KI are at particular risk for developing a condition known as hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone levels that are too low). If not treated, hypothyroidism can cause brain damage. Infants who receive KI should have their thyroid hormone levels checked and monitored by a doctor. Avoid repeat dosing of KI to newborns.
Where can I get KI?
KI is available without a prescription. You should talk to your pharmacist to get KI and for directions about how to take it correctly. Your pharmacist can sell you KI brands that have been approved by the FDA.

Great show from Alex Jones
The free On Demand Alex Jones broadcast (until his 11am central show today) is an excellent source to get the latest news. Alex reported that at least on Japanese nuclear reactor has melted down (many other reactors may be at risk) and the U. S. west coast is in line for the jet stream and trade winds. Also, he gives his opinion about the correct supplements and other radiation exposure prevention techniques to take as well as informed analysis about the level of risk for those who live in western U. S. and Canada, as you both do.
The mainstream media lied saying a reactor only collapsed when it exploded. This event, whether manmade or natural, is truly catastrophic.

What is Iodine’s natural function? Why do we need it anyway?
Nutritional Role of Iodine
Iodine’s function in the thyroid gland is to manufacture thyroxine, the hormone that regulates the metabolism in the efficient burning of calories and which also regulates children’s growth and development. The thyroid is involved in other bodily processes like reproduction, nerve and muscle function, breakdown of proteins and fats, hair and nail growth, and oxygen use by the cells.
Health Benefits of Iodine in Human Nutrition
* For healthy thyroid gland and efficient metabolism
* For weight loss and burning excess fat
* For normal growth and development
* For fibrocystic breasts
* For energy and mental acuity
* For healthy hair, nails, skin and teeth
Natural Sources of Iodine
Kelp (sea vegetation), onions, seafood (saltwater fish), table salt, and animals who graze in coastal areas, or fruits and vegetables also grown in iodine-rich soil
Usage Guidelines for Iodine
The RDA for iodine is 150 mcg. Ingestion of up to 20 times the RDA has no known side effects. Side effects of 30 times the RDA may include mouth sores, metallic taste, swollen salivary glands, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, rash, and breathing difficulties. An iodine deficiency is characterized by an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), low thyroid hormone level and hypothyroidism. Other symptoms of iodine deficiency and thyroid problems may include fatigue, dry skin, rise in blood fats, voice hoarseness, slow reflexes, and poor mental clarity.
You can get iodine in food…
Iodine Rich Foods
List of Foods Rich in Iodine
The table below does not just provide an iodine rich foods list. Rather, it also acquaints you with the iodine content present in each of the food stuff in micrograms (mcg). (100 grams is about 3.5 oz) Notice that the Iodine content though is in mcg not mg. So this is a small amount compared to what is needed.
Some Other Foods High in Iodine
From the above table, you have seen that there are many iodine rich foods. However, apart from these foodstuffs, some other iodine rich foods include,
* Dulse
* Kombu
* Arame
* Wakame
* Hijike
* Nori
* Kelp
So with the above mentioned table of iodine rich foods, you can see that there are many such foods rich in iodine that can be easily included in the regular diet. All the above said foods are usually safe to eat in sufficient quantities. However, if you have a pre-existing allergy for any of the food items do consult a doctor and get a better alternative prescribed for yourself. Eat Healthy Stay Well!!!
FOODS THAT PREVENT THE BODY FROM UTILIZING IODINE
Foods that prevent the body from using iodine are: turnip, cabbage, mustard greens, cassava root, soybeans, peanuts, pine nuts and millet. These foods are called goitrogens and excessive consumption can cause goiters. However, cooking usually inactivates goitrogens.
Best options for protection from strong radiation:
KELP
You can take Kelp capsules certainly or powder…although if you are not used to taking Kelp, the taste of the powder …well, it tastes like seaweed. J Because of the Bromide in Kelp, all the Iodine may not be as bioavailable. Also, some Kelps are contaminated with an excess of arsenic. Other seaweeds also contain a good amount of iodine. We do like to sprinkle various seaweeds in our soups, sometimes on eggs or other things in which one might want salt. They do give a nice “salty” flavor as well. If I can find an Atlantic Kelp in bulk and get it to everyone I will.
LUGOL’S
We like Lugol’s Iodine…available from your local pharmacists without a prescription. Just to give you some allopathic confirmation, here is a quote (below) from a medical site about taking Lugol’s before a nuclear medicine test is done. As well potassium iodide is what the military uses in cases where they want soldier protected from radiation and fallout. This is in Lugol’s. (We ordered our from Hy-vee pharmacy) It comes in different strengths so the dosage info is different for each one.
Lugol’s Dosing
· 2% solution 2.5 mg per drop (5 drops for 12.5 mg equal to one iodoral pill)
· 5% solution 6.25 mg per drop (2 drops to equal one iodoral pill)
(This varies per solution…check your bottle instructions)
It appears that a normal dose would be about 2 drops a day, Dr. Jarvis likes to put it with 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar in water. It has no taste really. As mentioned below, a therapeutic dose may be as much as 10 drops per day. I do not know what would be the need in a case like we have above with Japan. Our family will be taking about 2 drops a day until we figure out correct dosage for this situation.
http://www.hps.org/publicinformation/ate/faqs/nuclearmedicinediagnosticproceduresfaq.html
Lugol’s solution (potassium iodide) is given to protect the thyroid gland. Lugol’s solution is used because of a process called a “mass effect.” As iodine is ordinarily taken up efficiently by the thyroid gland, flooding the body with iodine will exhaust the thyroid’s ability to take up the iodine. If most of the available iodine is nonradioactive iodine, and only a little is radioactive, the thyroid will take up mostly nonradioactive iodine and little of the radioactive iodine. However, nonradioactive iodine will not block all the radioactive iodine. Instead of taking up 10-25 percent of the available radioactive iodine, the thyroid with Lugol’s solution will take up only about 0.1-0.5 percent of the available radioiodine. This will decrease the radiation dose to the thyroid and preclude possible ill effects on the gland. Lugol’s solution, at about 10 drops per day by mouth, is usually started a day before the administration of 131I compounds and is continued for at least a week.
IODORAL
Also there is a product called Iodoral that some people like which is in capsule form of iodine. I’ve attached a PDF of different iodine products and what their benefits/downsides are. I did not create this, I pulled this from another website.
We have some friends who take Iodoral regularly and really like it. We have no personal experience with this.
There are some precautions when taking Lugol’s…or any other iodine product…. However many of these are for a very HIGH consumption of Iodine, over 30 times the RDA (recommended daily allowance) so don’t let it freak you out, just need to be aware, esp. if you are on medication.
http://www.drugs.com/mmx/lugol-s-solution.html
Lugol’s Dosing
· 2% solution 2.5 mg per drop (5 drops for 12.5 mg equal to one Iodoral pill)
· 5% solution 6.25 mg per drop (2 drops to equal one Iodoral pill)
According to Hulda Clark:
Lugol’s Iodine Solution is “old-fashioned” iodine. Iodine has a distinctive trait – it hangs up on anything and everything. In fact, it attaches itself so quickly we consider everything it touches as “stained.” This is just the property we want to make it safe for use. The amount you use is immediately hung up, or attached, to your mucous and cannot be quickly absorbed into the blood or other organs. It stays in the stomach. And for this reason it is so useful for killing vicious bacteria like Salmonella.
WARNING: Do not take Lugol’s iodine if you know you are allergic to iodine. It could be fatal.
Six drops of Lugol’s solution can end it all for Salmonella. If you have gas and bloating, pour yourself 1/2 glass of water. Add 6 drops of Lugol’s (not more, not less), stir with wood or plastic, and drink all at once. The action is noticeable in an hour. Take this dose 4 times a day, after meals and at bedtime, for 3 days in a row, then as needed. This eradicates even a stubborn case of Salmonella.
Notice how calming 6 drops of Lugol’s can be, soothing a manic stage and bringing a peaceful state where anxiety ruled before.
Lugol’s is perfectly safe (if not allergic) to take day after day, when needed, because of its peculiar attaching property. It arrives in the stomach, reattaches to everything in proximity. Doomed are all Salmonellas; doomed also are eggs of parasites that might be in the stomach (cysts).
Naturally, one would not leave such medicine within the reach of children. Also, one would not use anything medicinal, including Lugol’s, unless there were a need. When the gas and bloating problem has stopped, stop using Lugol’s. If one or two doses of Lugol’s cures the problem, stop. Store it in a perfectly secure place. In the past, 2/3 of a teaspoon (60 drops) of Lugol’s was the standard dose of iodine given to persons with thyroid disease. Six drops is small by comparison.

radiation detox
http://digitalangeldonnadj.com/blog/?p=4940
no one knows what will happen or what has happened
Read the link below that I pasted..plus you must add potassium rich foods to your diet
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/potassium-rich-foods-list-of-foods-high-in-potassium.html
as you will see from this link below it is possible to do this without taking the man made potassium Iodate
http://www.radiationdetox.com/depleted-uranium-detox.htm
Brown Seaweed Extract:
http://www.healthyworldstore.com/product-p/seaweed.htm
A concentrated extract from the richest type of Brown Seaweed. This product was developed for the Chernobyl catastrophe and patients, who were undertaking chemo and radiotherapy. Used for detoxification, thyroid gland rehabilitation, boosting the immune system, helping decrease high blood sugar and cholesterol levels, improving gastrointestinal tract function, and detoxifying the body from heavy metals, radioactive elements, free radicals and toxins. 3 a day. Can be used for pets too.
Consuming natural iodine, such as in the seaweeds, helps prevent the uptake of iodine-131 while iron inhibits the absorption of plutonium-238 and plutonium-239. Vitamin B-12 inhibits cobalt-60 uptake (used in nuclear medicine), zinc inhibits zinc-65 uptake and sulfur is preventative for sulfur-35 (a product of nuclear reactors) incorporation by the body.
Note:Platinum Plus Amino Acids also has dietary sulfur/MSM and is also helpful in moving out heavy metals, viruses, addressing protein deficiency, digestive issues, and rebuilding the spine.

Can be used for pets too.
Some people like knowing that they have an ongoing monitoring system for radiation in the environment, and this is just another tip available in “How to Neutralize the Harmful Effects of Radiation or Radioactive Exposure.”

I received an email today showing the POTENTIAL hazard of a nuclear power plant blast in Japan…. and where it/ the radiation would travel to. The gist was people need to have potassium iodide in their first aid kits.
Where do people stand (if we cannot take iodine)…. and do you have any thoughts/information on this topic please.
here is what I received:
I Received this from a good friend who is a Calif. Highway Patrol Officer.

Not to alarm anyone, but does your emergency supply kit include Potasium Iodide? The FDA recommends Thyrosafe.
Note: ThyroShield is a liquid potassium iodide and is also FDA recommended.
750 rads could be fatal. This is not an official map but shows what the jet stream can carry since it blows over the pacific.
Also, check radiation levels at this site.

This is VERY GOOD info that will come in very handy sooner or later. When CNN and FOX are telling Americans that things are going fairly well in Japan my response is that it’s time to redouble efforts.
We will need to have our own monitoring capabilites in place to know what is really going on with radiation levels, if not now, then in the future. The cheapest way to have that basic portable capability is with a “Nukalert” you can carry in your pocket, available from www.ki4u.com . I’ve had one for about 8 years and it DOES pick up on radiation as I found out at the dentist’s and had everyone wondering what all the little chirping noises were.
If you are expecting someone other than yourself to do anything for you to help you through planetary adjustments, you are going to have a very long wait. With God all things are possible and surviving radiation is mostly a matter of knowing what to do. There is plenty of information available to make this possible: inconvenient perhaps, but quite possible. Keep on keeping on.

Thank you Donna,
WOW so much information!
This is what I have sent to my newsletter friends and I hope it will help you stay calm and take the necessary precautions:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lovely friend,
We can't control natural disasters or even man made disasters but there is a lot you can do to protect yourself from the effects of radiation.
There is concern about potential health risks of radiation from the crippled nuclear reactors in Japan reaching America or other countries.
We need to raise our vibrations even higher now!
The most important thing is to use the power of our mind in a positive empowering way.
We use a technique called boosting that is basically a combination of ancient techniques including prayer, mediation, breathing, chanting, sending healing energy, being present. It is simple, everyone can and should do it. The change starts within us.
There is a lot of negative energy around that increases the level of stress.
Stress kills brain cells!
It is important to find our inner calm and peace - meditate and sleep enough (8-9 hours of sleep). The body heals and rejuvenates when our sleep is deep and enough. Feet chakra balancers help you sleep and help the body detox fast while you sleep.
Detoxing foods and supplements for radiation
* Turmeric, Miso, Spirulina, chlorella and the algaes (kelp, Nori, Kombu and Wakame are good sources of natural iodine), beans and lentils, gingseng, broccoli, cabbage, carrots (beta carotene veggies), apples.
Any greens - green smoothies, buckwheat and brown rice, sunflower seeds, brazilian nuts, cilantro, coconut butter and oil, fermented foods such as unpasteurized sauerkraut, garlic, Nutritional yeast Garlic, burdock, dandelion, milk thistle seed, Echinacea, Green tea. Avoid the consumption of sugar and sweets.
* Hepa-mek & osteo-mek one strips the cell of radiation, the other reverses the damage and revives dying cells it has causes
The links:
http://homeopathic-health.blogspot.com/2007/04/hepa-mek.html
http://homeopathic-health.blogspot.com/2007/04/blog-post_3227.html
* Zeolite
one of the most powerful immune system booster on Earth that was used by the Russian government to absorb radioactive chemicals and other harmful toxins after the Chernobyl disaster.
* Orgone energy - corrects and protects ones energy field (deflects radiation)
Any orgone tool (pendant, cone etc) will protect you from harmful negative energy as it transmutes it into good positive energy, cones are for a large space (house)
In the case of nuclear radiation the radiation deflector orgone pendant and cones are the best in absorbing and protecting against nuclear radiation, strengthening, aligning all chakras and meridians, restructuring DNA. Please wear your pendants. People told me these orgone pendants are more powerful then the Qlink pendants.
*Water!
We drink alkaline water! Cannot stress enough the benefits of this miraculous water! You must maintain the alkaline design of the body with an alkaline lifestyle, water and diet. Contact us if you want to know more...
*Baking Soda and Epsom salt bath
Neutralize Radiation effects FAST
You can get some relief from these symptoms by taking baths using epsom salts (1 to 2 cups) and baking soda (1 cup) in a tub of water and soaking for 20 minutes (soaking for more than 20 minutes may cause you to get too exhausted). Dead Sea salt is also fine for this application because it is high in magnesium.
ExerciseReduces the side effects of radiation, maintains red blood cells (red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body's tissues), fights fatigue (radiation is known for causing fatigue)
Before I close, I would love you to close your eyes and send a good thought and bless people in Japan. Next bless yourself and dear ones. It is as IMPORTANT!
If you develop the habit of blessing it comes back into your life stronger and faster.
Until next time,
Stay Healthy
~Lilly
Knowledge is Power (Fukushima – Nuclear Meltdown Seems Increasingly Likely)
Quote: | Hello Everyone,
Hope this message finds you doing well! With the increased info I’ve received the past 24 hours I have changed my tune on the seriousness of the Fukushima Power Plant in regards to global fallout. It now appears that a partial or total nuclear meltdown seems increasingly likely which in a worst case scenario will have global impact (not to mention the financial meltdown it could also trigger). Mike Adams has done more great research connecting with an inside source in Japan who has a background in atomic energy and nuclear reactors. Read below and click link for full article…….
A Personal Comment……… please remember we are all connected as living beings on this planet regardless of creed or color……I’m calling for a concerted effort of prayer and positive intentions for this whole thing to subside……there is POWER IN PRAYER. And if done together the POWER is exponential. For those on this list……I am extending an invitation for you to join me in focused prayer at 12 noon EST for 5 minutes of focused prayer (and if you don’t like the word “prayer,” do whatever opens your communication line with the Creator and invokes the creative healing powers within yourself directed to our brothers and sisters in Japan.
PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE, Daren
P.S. If the Fukushima really blows……..you should maybe consider heading for the southern hemisphere as the trade winds do not cross the equator. |
NaturalNews Insider Alert ( www.NaturalNews.com ) email newsletter
(Unsubscribe instructions at bottom)
Dear NaturalNews readers,
Things are getting far worse in Japan. As of this writing, a partial or total nuclear meltdown event seems increasingly likely. Nuclear engineers have essentially surrendered to the laws of physics now at the Fukushima power plant and pulled all the workers off the site. Now it’s just a matter of watching and praying.
This is Japan’s worst nuclear nightmare coming to life. The future of civilization on our planet will be forever altered after this event. Expect massive changes to be set into motion on issues like energy use, fossil fuels, the false promise of “scientific progress,” the destruction of our planet’s environment and other life-and-death issues.
Today we received word from an inside source in Tokyo who told me that the Fukushima nuclear plant is now basically a “dirty bomb” just waiting to go off. Read the full report here:
http://www.naturalnews.com/031718_nuclear_power_dirty_bomb.html
Meanwhile, online sellers of potassium iodide supplements are now engaged in widespread price gouging and profiteering. Our report by Ethan Huff exposes these highly unethical pricing practices that seek to exploit fear for obscene profits:
http://www.naturalnews.com/031716_potassium_iodide_price_gouging.html
As a service to those who are desperate to get sources of iodine before the possibility of a nuclear fallout event (which could strike the U.S. West Coast), I’ve put together an article that highlights natural sources of iodine in foods and superfoods, many of which you should still be able to get at local health food stores if you hurry:
http://www.naturalnews.com/031717_iodine_sea_vegetables.html
And Dr. Marc Sircus brings us an informative story today on using iodine to prevent damage from radiation exposure: Get the facts you need to know:
http://www.naturalnews.com/031715_iodine_radiation.html
We are working around the clock here at NaturalNews right now to find you more sources for iodine. Potassium is easy to get through regular foods (bananas, sweet potatoes, etc.), but iodine is much harder to come by. We’re also working like crazy to bring you up-to-the-minute news about these developments in Japan and how this is going to impact our world.
There are huge issues here that most people have not considered yet. For example, how will Japan rebuild its infrastructure after all this? It will almost certainly start selling off U.S. debt (Treasury notes). This could start a tidal wave of selling off of U.S. debt which would make it impossible for the U.S. to auction off its next round of needed debt to finance the out-of-control debt spending happening under the Obama administration.
Japan’s nuclear meltdown, in other words, could catalyze America’s financial meltdown.
We could quite literally be looking at a financial tsunami that follows the physical tsunami that has wiped out a huge portion of Japan’s infrastructure.
What can you do to protect yourself? We’re scrambling to get you good information on this as quickly as we can. Our “Financial Preparedness” event coming this Sunday has long since been sold out, but we will work to make recordings of the event available next week at a reasonable price for those who want to listen to it. And for the revenue we’re earning on this, by the way, we’ve already pledged $5,000 in donations to Japan, and we are working on ways to coordinate more rescue efforts that may involve nutritional supplements for those in need.
The world needs our collective help right now. If you believe in prayer, I ask that you pray for Japan today, and for the future of life on our planet. If you don’t believe in prayer, then send good luck, good karma or whatever you believe in. This is a defining moment for human civilization. The future of our world rests upon our shoulders at this very instant.
If we cannot prevent our own self destruction, then we have no future on planet Earth. Let us hope and pray that mankind will find the wisdom to live on this world without destroying it in the process. (Is that too much to hope for?)
P.S. Chlorella helps rid the body of radiation *after* exposure. Spirulina has also been used therapeutically in this way following nuclear disasters. You can expect the next high-demand superfood items to include chlorella, spirulina and other cleansing supplements such as zeolites. We are currently stocking up on a massive amount of chlorella supplements in order to meet the expected demand so that we don’t run out this time…
More news continues below on pomegranates, fighting cancer with watercress, benefits of beetroot juice and much more (see below)…
URGENT PRACTICAL ADVICE ABOUT RADIATION PROTECTION
Dear Friends of HealthyWorldStore.com:
Below is the best article with the most practical natural ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from radiation exposures that are expected to begin soon on the mainland US and Hawaii. I do not know who the hero is who wrote it, but it was forwarded to me, and now from me to you.
Hoarding of potassium iodide supplements are expected to continue, and we have very few bottles of Brown Seaweed Extract left in stock. We expect to have a couple hundred more in stock next week, so get it while you can. Expect a run on miso soup in health food stores, and baking soda in supermarkets, as well.
Our store is currently well-stocked with ZeoLife containing natural iodine, but we expect to sell out of this product soon too, after this mailing in fact, because, as you read below, not only is a natural iodine supplement recommended daily during exposure periods, but zeolite is probably the best natural detoxification material along with edible clay.
We are normally well-stocked with edible (Prophyllite) clay, but expect these supplies to disappear quickly too, and will try our best to reorder depending on your need and demand.
Green Harvest is highly recommended now too, as you will read about the need for excellent organic green nutrients available in this product. I have been using this product daily for years.
For the recommended extra vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants, PrimoLife would be an excellent single-product choice.
Right now we are working feverishly on manufacturing two new products to help attenuate ionizing radiation risks, and will let you know when these products become available.
We ask for everyone to pray for humanity, all life forms, and Mother Earth.
In 1998, I ended the book Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse stating that THE ONLY RELIABLE PROTECTION AGAINST RADIATION IS YOUR CONNECTION TO GOD. I pray that you received this message early enough to secure this sustaining relationship.
With much LOVE in 528,
How to Protect Against Radiation Exposure
The unfolding events relating to Japan’s damaged nuclear reactors is raising the concern in the U.S. of a worst-case scenario of multiple meltdowns with a consequent cloud of radioactive particles following the jet stream over to the U.S. The prevailing jet stream winds will impact Los Angeles to Alaska, and will include Hawaii. Radioactive pollution will reach the U.S. within 36 hours. It will then travel the typical jet stream across the U.S. that you see on your daily weather programs.
A coordinated cover-up of the severity of the situation is underway. This sort of behavior is typical of governments, especially when they are interested in protecting their power base and protecting the interests of transnational corporations.
Japanese health authorities are passing out iodine tablets to those in the vicinity of these reactors — as it is common knowledge that the thyroid gland is a weak spot when it comes to radiation exposure. By flooding the body with iodine it is taken up by the thyroid which then blocks radiation uptake into the thyroid, reducing the risk for future thyroid cancer (which is already an epidemic form of cancer in the U.S. in part likely due to excess CT scans).
Such iodine saturation should occur 24 hours prior to exposure and be maintained during the duration of excess exposure. This solution is not without risks, especially when potassium iodide is used. That is because excess iodine can clog thyroid function, inducing either hypo or hyper thyroid. However, that risk is trivial compared to acute radiation exposure — thus iodine makes sense. We like water-soluble iodine that in our experience is much less problematic when higher doses are used. Liquids can be applied transdermally, directly over the neck region or taken orally, and reapplied as desired based on concerns.
Protecting the thyroid with iodine seems to be about all public health officials are willing to recommend to the public. However, there are other important steps every person should consider. Radiation interaction within your body generates massive amounts of damaging free radicals, in turn potentially inducing DNA damage that may lead to future cancer — often manifesting a decade or two later. This means it is a good idea to maximize your overall antioxidant defenses. Ideally, this system of defense should be bolstered in advance to provide maximal defense. Unfortunately the antioxidant defense systems of a majority of Americans are in shoddy condition.
Many nutrients contain antioxidants and many of these behave in your vital antioxidant network to protect your DNA from damage. In your diet these nutrients come from fruits, vegetables, whey protein, and whole grains. Additionally, almost any nutrient supplement with antioxidant properties, such as vitamin C, will help bolster your antioxidant team. We suggest that everyone consume a broad spectrum of antioxidant support as the minimum. Indeed, a cocktail of antioxidants (selenium, vitamin C, N-acetyl cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, alpha-tocopherol succinate, and co-enzyme Q10) started 24 hours after a lethal level of radiation exposure has been shown to be highly protective.
There are three specific nutrients that have science showing they can protect your body against radiation damage: tocotrienols, antioxidants from berries, and lipoic acid.
Tocotrienols are a unique form of vitamin E that offers protection that regular vitamin E does not. In a recent animal experiment carried out by the U.S. Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute it was shown that gamma tocotrienol can protect against whole body radiation exposure.
Excessive radiation exposure damages DNA, especially DNA relating to the system in our bone marrow that produces all the red and white blood cells that are vital for survival. Therefore radiation exposure has adverse consequences on circulatory health and immune system competence, disturbing energy balance and increasing the risk for cancer. Of particular importance are the hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that constantly rejuvenate blood and can become any of the white or red blood cells, as well as the hematopoietic progenator cells (HPCs) that transform into specific blood cells. Both HSCs and HPCs are the life force of blood cell rejuvenation and essential to your good health.
Stem cell colonies (HSCs) are 80% – 86% maintained in gamma tocotrienol-treated mice, while they were 50% reduced in controls. Similarly, progenator cells (HPCs) have recovered completely within 7 days in gamma tocotrienol treated mice, while they remained at 30% for weeks in the controls.
A detailed analysis of the bone marrow showed that gamma tocotrienol maintained the regenerative integrity of bone marrow cells. Gamma tocotrienol protects hematopoietic tissue by preserving the HSCs and HPCs and by preventing persistent DNA damage.
Another recent animal study shows that gamma tocotrienol can offset the adverse effects of radiation exposure, including the reduction of peroxynitrite, the most damaging free radical. This is important because as free radicals begin forming their reactions can cascade into producing large amounts of the most damaging of all free radicals, peroxynitrite. Short-circuiting peroxynitrite formation in response to radiation exposure is of immense importance to protecting DNA.
Lipoic acid is a very small and versatile fat- and water-soluble antioxidant. Animal studies show that it helps maintain the antioxidant defense system in multiple body tissues upon radiation exposure, especially protecting the brain, liver, spleen, kidney, and testes.
The health status of some 6,000 workers from Latvia who went to clean-up the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant has been followed for several decades. These workers suffered higher-than-normal rates of problems in their nervous, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine system (especially thyroid) and immunological systems. A study conducted on some of these workers 10 years after the fact showed that 600 mg of lipoic acid for two months was able to normalize many, but not all, of their lab abnormalities. Too bad they didn’t have protection prior to and during exposure. Pretreatment with lipoic acid has been shown to significantly reduce radiation exposure damage to the brain.
Recent animal research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture showed that blueberry and strawberry extracts helped prevent brain damage from radiation exposure. Interestingly, the polyphenols of each fruit protected different areas of the brain — supporting a variety of dietary berry intake and/or supplements with multiple berries. Having an adequate antioxidant defense system for more optimal health is common sense. During times of increased stress your needs for antioxidants rise — and this relates to any type of stress. Radiation exposure is simply one more type of stress — a rather nasty type. The demands in your life or existing health concerns may already be testing your antioxidant bank account. Bolstering your antioxidant defense system to compensate for a potential challenge is common sense.
If you have been exposed to too many X-rays or CAT scans, if you fly too much, work with diagnostic medical equipment or are environmentally sensitive and have ingested elevated levels of radioactive contaminated food, air or water, you also want to partake of the following protocol on a regular basis
Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
The oral administration of sodium bicarbonate diminishes the severity of the changes produced by uranium in the kidneys. The kidneys are usually the first organs to show chemical damage upon uranium exposure. Old military manuals suggest doses or infusions of sodium bicarbonate to help alkalinize the urine if this happens. This makes the uranyl ion less kidney-toxic and promotes excretion of the nontoxic uranium-carbonate complex. So useful and strong is sodium bicarbonate that at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, researcher Don York has used baking soda to clean soil contaminated with uranium. Sodium bicarbonate binds with uranium, separating it from the dirt; so far, York has removed as much as 92 percent of the uranium from contaminated soil samples. The United States Army recommends the use of bicarbonate to protect the kidneys from radiation damage.
Sodium bicarbonate can safely remove paint, grease, oil and smoke residue, decreasing workers’ exposure to harsh chemicals and eliminating much of the hazardous waste associated with other cleaners. “Sodium bicarbonate is able to clean in areas where other substances pose fire hazards, because baking soda is a natural fire extinguisher,” says Kenneth Colbert, a general manager for Arm & Hammer. This is the reason it’s used by oncology centers to control chemo agent spills and it’s actually used intravenously to protect patients from the hazardous toxicity of chemotherapy.
Uranium is one of the only metals that get significant bonding from carbonate. Just flushing a lot of bicarbonate through the system, along with whatever kidney support you are going to use, will be very helpful. There is no better therapy for radiation sickness then intense sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and magnesium baths with the appropriate clay added in. Even sodium thiosulfate can be added to these baths and that instantly neutralizes any chlorine in the bath water while simultaneously providing sulfur for the vital sulfur pathways.
Bicarbonate and Nuclear Fallout
If the bombs start dropping anywhere on earth, or if you live near a nuclear plant, you will want to have a large amount of sodium bicarbonate on hand. Minimum stocks should be 25 or 50 pounds. Normally we recommend someone start with using one pound of bicarbonate in a bath but that could easily be two or three pounds in an emergency situation. You will also need a lot of magnesium salts and the very best and most penetrating of them is the magnesium chloride in the form of magnesium bath flakes. Dead Sea salt is also fine for this application because it is high in magnesium.
Exposure to radiation causes a cascade of free radicals that wreak havoc on the body. Radiation decimates the body’s supply of glutathione. Nebulization is one of the best ways to quickly increase glutathione levels as is the use of glutathione rectal suppositories. The main cancer risk from inhaled uranium oxide and other airborne radioactive particles is from tiny insoluble particles lodged deep in the lungs. That’s a good reason to nebulize both glutathione and bicarbonate directly into the lungs and one must wonder why governments and health officials haven’t sponsored this.
Uranium oxide can be inhaled by soldiers and civilians, it sticks to the lining of the lungs, it is taken up by cells of the immune systems and gets into lymph glands, bone, brain, hormone producing glands, ovaries and testes. It stays in these organs for many decades and is only very slowly excreted in urine. Nebulization topically treats the lung tissues allowing for best effect on contaminated lung tissues.
The scientist with the greatest genius, especially when it comes to mercury chelation, is Dr. Chris Shade. He has developed a sophisticated detoxification system based on enhancing the natural removal of metals through the intestines. Though his specialty is mercury, detoxification and chelation of radioactive poisons use the same pathways as mercury. He has developed three products that are effective for the removal of mercury including a liposome formula that allows us to get glutathione into the system via oral administration.
Combining his formulas with chlorella powder gives the best possible medical formula to help remove radioactive contamination as long as iodine, magnesium chloride, a super-food, spirulina-based powerful chlorophyll-rich formula that is easy to administer in high quantities because of its exceptionally pleasant taste, and edible clay are used as well. The intense levels of will quickly help build up a person’s immune system and help them recover from the RNA/DNA damage caused by radiation exposure.
Uranium-238 is being eliminated in the hair using heavy metal detox protocols; to date there is no natural chelating agent known to mobilize and eliminate uranium-238 from body tissues.
Cilantro will move heavy metals and radioactive material out of the brain cells into the detoxification pathways with rectal suppositories of Detoxamin working on the liver’s glutathione pathway to get the material out through the intestines. The internal consumption of edible clay and external clays dramatically facilitate this process. Zeolite clay baths are a very effective way of removing heavy metals from the body and increase one’s chances of survival if exposed to nuclear fallout. Also activated charcoal powder in water will bind these toxins and pass them out of the body.
Iodine
Iodine is the most obvious and important element in protecting against radiation damages. Radioactive iodine will plunge into any and all iodine receptor cites that have no iodine in them due to iodine deficiencies. This is a serious problem because over 90 percent of people in North America are iodine deficient. This leaves them incredibly vulnerable to radioactive iodine, which is one of the principle forms of radiation given off in nuclear accidents and from nuclear weapons.
Intravenous Cocktails
In cases of serious exposure, IV cocktails with high dosages of vitamin C, magnesium chloride or sulfate, sodium bicarbonate and very pure seawater full of all the minerals necessary for life would be ideal. Dr. David Brownstein administers a slow IV vitamin C drip–usually 25-50 gm, with minerals, and he adds 10cc of sodium bicarbonate.
The addition of bicarb to the IVs made a huge clinical improvement.
Nutrients to the Rescue
Spirulina and chlorella have been used heavily by the Russians after the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. And the Japanese love their miso soup and that was said to help some of their citizens survive the fallout after the Americans attacked two of their cities. We recommend a green powder in high doses that is high spirulina and chlorella content because it is like rocket fuel for the cells, providing them with a broad range of concentrated nutrients.
Miso is effective for detoxifying your body of radiation. During World War II, two hospitals that were located side by side were hit with atomic radiation, in one hospital people consumed Miso and all of them survived while many people in the other hospital that did not take miso died. Miso is rich in vitamin B12 therefore it is suitable for vegetarians who are in shortage of vitamin B12. For best results do not cook miso.
There are a number of foods that can better help our bodies tolerate the effects of pollution. Eating lower on the food chain minimizes our chemical intake. Consuming more whole grains has a multitude of benefits, unless you are intolerant to certain grains. Their high fiber content binds with toxins and lessens intestinal transit time. Their vitamin B6 content nourishes the thymus gland and their vitamin E content helps the body to better utilize oxygen. The grain buckwheat is high in rutin and helps to protect against radiation and stimulates new bone marrow production. The mucilaginous fiber in seaweed helps to prevent the reabsorbing of radioactive strontium 90.
Following the bombing of Nagasaki, a group of surviving macrobiotic doctors and their patients avoided radiation sickness by eating brown rice, miso and seaweed. They also did not get leukemia. Seaweeds also help to break down fatty deposits. High-chlorophyll foods like wheatgrass, barley grass, kale, collard greens, beet greens, swiss chard, etc. strengthen cells, transport oxygen, help to detoxify the blood and liver as well as help to neutralize polluting elements and stimulate RNA production. Sulfur-rich vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and mustard greens, as well as garlic, combine with heavy metals and help prevent free radical damage.
The sulfur compounds trigger increased expression of your glutathione system, which results in both metal detoxification and free radical neutralization. The other group of food compounds that do this is the polyphenolic antioxidants — pine bark extract, green tea extract, grape seed extract, and Haritaki or terminalia chebula, an Ayurvedic fruit that is the basis for many medicines including the intestinal detoxifier Triphala. This fruit is used extensively in Tibetan Medicine where it is called the “King of Herbs.” It has potent effects on the glutathione system and on expression of other intracellular antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD).
Research on animals indicates that curcumin (an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound found in the curry spice turmeric) may help protect against radiation-induced damage to the skin. Other research in animals shows that the herb ginkgo biloba may help shield against organ damage resulting from radiation therapy. And aloe vera is a natural remedy for radiation-induced skin changes preventing or minimizing radiation-induced skin reactions.
Kelp and the Fallout Zone: Natural Foods Stores in Western USA Sold Out of Radiation-Fighting Supplements
by Steven Hoffman
Boulder, CO (March 16, 2011) — Returning from the Natural Products Expo West on Monday, I discovered something very disturbing, and yet fascinating, as I went shopping at my local natural foods store in my hometown of Boulder.
All of the kelp dietary supplements were sold out. This is a phenomenon that is occurring in natural foods stores throughout the Western USA. While government officials are saying risk of radiation exposure is low from the nuclear reactor catastrophe in Japan, US citizens aren’t buying it. Instead, they are buying foods, nutritional supplements and natural medicines to counter the effects of radiation, to the point where these products are out of stock in many stores throughout the West.
At Natural Grocers in nearby Longmont, CO, they were also sold out of all kelp and much of their green foods supplements. I spoke with nutritionists in the store, and also with a fellow informed citizen who was shopping for supplements to help protect his teenage son from the risks of radiation fallout. They recommended kelp, chlorella, spirulina, green foods, selenium and lots of dark green leafy vegetables to help counter the effects of radioactive fallout. Convinced that green foods are good for us anyway, we purchased a high quality superfood powder just in case . Maybe a good idea as the news worsens by the day.
Just to check, I called a Whole Foods Market in the Bay Area, as California will be among the first to experience fallout from the jet stream. A team member there told me that yep, they’re sold out of all kelp supplements, too. Same phenomenon at Pharmaca locations and independent natural foods stores throughout the West, too, according to sources.
Additionally, I was told that Whole Foods will not carry any potassium iodide supplements in large “milligram” potencies. Since there is a great risk of iodine toxicity, these higher levels must be taken only under the supervision of a physician, Whole Foods says, and many experts agree. The natural grocery chain is exploring such supplements in safer “micro-milligram” potencies, as demand for these products has soared through the roof.
I also spoke with my friend, herbal medicine expert and noted author Brigitte Mars ( www.brigittemars.com ) to ask how people can protect themselves from radiation through food, nutrition and natural medicine. Excerpts from her recommended list, posted on her Facebook page and on her website, is as follows. Read the full article on Brigitte’s website.
* Buckwheat and brown rice
* Seaweeds rich in iodine and microminerals, such as Hiziki, found in macrobiotic or Asian food sections
* Wheatgrass and barley grass
* Sulfur rich vegetables including broccoli, cabbage and mustard greens
* High-pectin foods including carrots, sunflower seeds and apples
* Liver-cleansing foods such as artichokes, beets and radishes
* Fermented foods such as miso and unpasteurized sauerkraut
* Nutritional yeast
* Garlic, burdock, dandelion, milk thistle seed, nettles, yellow dock
* Echinacea
* Green and black tea
* Eleuthero
* Vitamins A, beta-carotene, B complex and C; and zinc, calcium and magnesium
In a letter to subscribers, raw food specialist David Wolfe shared these sobering recommendations:
“How to protect yourself and your thyroid against radiation: kelp, ginseng, ashwaganda (recently found to regrow nerves), chlorella, zeolites, fulvic acid, nascent iodine, reishi mushroom, sea salt (also salty miso), botanical (plant-derived) or lipo-vitamin C, magnesium (chlorophyll), selenium (brazil nuts), coconut butter (coconut products), Megahydrate, Crystal Energy. Spread the word .
“Start small, but increase your dosages rapidly and dramatically if you live in Hawaii, Western Canada, and the Western USA. Start now. Fallout will descend upon North America sometime around March 22.
“If you live in Japan, start taking massive doses of these foods, superfoods, superherbs, and supplements immediately. These are all safe for children.
“Radioactive fallout lingers longest in medicinal mushrooms. If you live in North America, pick your mushrooms NOW. I wouldn’t recommend picking any medicinal mushrooms in the fallout zones (after the fallout begins) for several years, if not a decade depending on how bad the radiation is.
“If you live in North America, stock up on food NOW because fresh food may be contaminated for several months after the fallout comes down from the jet stream into the fallout zones.”
Regarding any of the recommendations above, I urge you to do your homework and consult a physician and complementary alternative medicine practitioner.
Another concern is how fallout from the crippled reactor in Japan might affect agriculture in the Western US, as so much of our fruits and vegetables come from California and the Northwest. Spring rains could well bring radioactive fallout to this year’s crop, and how will radiation in the soil affect future crops? I will be doing some more research in this regard for an upcoming post.
Between a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year, and now the nuclear tragedy in Japan, the earth is being increasingly subjected to major environmental trauma from heavy industry. So are its people. As long as the costs of environmental destruction continue to be born by the citizens and not the corporations and governments that are culpable, we have no level playing field.
So we are left to buying out all the kelp off the shelf of our local natural foods stores to try to protect our families from the fallout of a legacy of greed and destruction.
